It's P-38L 44-53236 painted in Bong's markings.

Thanks Jack, especially for that detail shot of the B17-F nose with the .50 caliber through the plexiglas.

I agree that B-17 under belly prospective with bomb bay doors prior to release is one I have never seen before.

Just looked at that underside of the B17 on the bombing run picture and noticed just how well the engines/props are synchronized.

Is that just a reflection, or are the tail guns firing?

Great pics! Thanks for posting!

Looks like a reflection to me.

Is that black square under the tail the tailwheel's wheelwell? Is it open?
It looks like a round tail gun too.

It's the canvas cover for the retracted tail wheel.

I agree...the sun appears to be reflecting off of the tail gunner's armor glass windows. The cheyenne "pumpkin" is also pointing down and slightly to the right, but doesn't look as though it's firing.

It's interesting to see the chin turret guns rotated to the right to their max azimuth limit. I guess this would only make sense since the bombardier was busy with the bomb run and most likely had his gunners hand station in the stowed position.
