The plot to this Film is simple. Holden is ordered on an
impossible suicide mission to destroy some commie bridges behind enemy lines. The problem is that His Aunt Tillie works at the "Golden Dragon" Steakhouse at the base of one of the bridges. Does He warn Her about the mission?? Or does He complete it?? Find Out
Tonite on TCM. 10:15pm Eastern, 9:15 Central, 8:15 Mountain, 7:15 Pacific. It's on right after "STALAG 17". Another Great Film. "Bridges At Toko-Ri" is also on DVD for just 10 bucks .... Digger

Digger...(which, by the way, is the name of our Aussie Shepherd

)
"Aunt Tillie"? I've seen this movie a number of times and Aunt Tillie is a figment of your obvious stupor.

Actually,
I think "Tilly" is the nick name of the deck crane the crew positions to protect the forward parked aircraft during an emergency landing sequence.

I always thought Mickey Rooney should have won an oscar for his dying scene in the muddy ditch.....He could really die good...

Back in my "ute" in drama class, the instructor pointed out to us that, "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard." I found that to be quite true.

Good thing Aunt Alice works at the Golden Dragon Steakhouse, because the place across the street only serves Kim Chee and not Naval Aviators.

Actually, Aunt Tilly got
fired from Her Cleaning Job at the "Ho-Chi Hilton" for stealing Paper Cups. (She Drinks)
Ah, I should'a been a Script Writer....
Seriously though, keep a Sharp Eye Peeled on Mickey Rooney's Sikorsky H-5 Helicopter in the final scene. Right before it gets shot down. The bullet holes are already there
before it gets shot at!!

Ha! Ha! I guess they wanted to film it all in one take.... Digger

thought rooney's top hat was lame. the carrier is the uss oriskany, now recently sunk in the gulf of mexico as an artificial reef. if you watch the flick you'll see her all her splendor.

How about the USS ESSEX CV-9 in the dock scene in Yokahama?

Tom, the tophat is correct for Rooney's character.
Mitchener had Mike Forney wear the scarf and tophat in the book. they were his lucky charms and trademark . They also allowed the pilots he was rescueing to identify him as their rescuer. Forney had a reputation as a brawler and was always bucking the regs. That's why he was sent to fly off of the garbage scow that was closer to enemy territory.

I figured you might have known about those details, Tom. I liked him better in Toko-Ri than I did in the Andy Hardy movies.

This is a really great film. One of the unique features of this film is that the star buys the farm in the end.Brubaker(William Holden)takes it in the shorts for the whole movie. He had already done his bit to win WWII and then gets recalled back to active duty flying Grumman Panther jets for the Korean "Police action"(whatever the fug that means.)He is presently married to Grace Kelly when they reactivate him.God she was beautiful! He gets sent to the H3ll hole that Korea Was/is only to get shot down and to die in a Han Kook rice paddy with Mickey Rooney and Earl Holliman providing additional bodies War is hell! life aint fair!

"Where do we get such men......." One of the best lines of the movie. Also, this was Grace Kelly's last movie.
