Great stuff, Jack! That tail gunner was lucky.

Hmmm... That first one looks a bit staged. Look at the size of the spray gun. Not much good for the details.

Actually I have a couple of those and I believe they said "smart ass".
Which I suyppose if better than being a dump ass!!
Actually From my narrow way of thinking, what's the use of having them if you can't share them with your friends and others who'd enjoy seeing them also!

If you are referring to me, I was just wondering what the significance of the photo was. It must have been staged for a reason and it isn't obvious to me what that reason is.

I'm still very happy to see the photo staged or not. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on that point. Why would I ever NOT want to see a period photo? :?

She was headed home to sell bonds like the B-25D Desert Warrior which had a similar map painted on the fuselage.

"Look at the size of the spray gun. Not much good for the details."

A question, without any ulterior motive:

Isn't the size of the nozzle opening in reality what matters?

True that given the size of the spray gun fine detail would not be possible, but the flames seen there, do not look that elaborate to me.

Any comments, please?

Saludos,

Tulio

Very nice photos.

For the record ...

42-3078 (*Winsome Winn*, 381st BG, 534th BS) shot down by flak and fighters and crashed in Schiffweiler, Saarland, Germany, Jan 7, 1944.
2 KIA, 8 POW. MACR 1873.

Boeing B-17G-15-BO Fortress
42-31335 (385th BG, 548th BS, "Honky Tonk Sal") crashed 5 mi E
of Cambridge, England, May 12, 1945. W/o and salvaged.

IF I remember correctly, that picture of the Kate Smith B-24 was taken shortly after the pulled her nose out of the mud. I have a picture somewhere of her still nose down. Although I don't remember if it was a nose gear collapse, or just sank into the mud.

My guess is that they would have masked them and then used that spray gun. I've never seen smaller nozzles for those guns, but I am an amateur aircraft painter so I am no expert. A large gun like that isn't used for fine details like you would use an airbrush to paint a model or a t-shirt.

Also, thanks for clarifying that those are flames. I didn't know what the heck they represented.
