Lackland Shots 1994

These were taken on Bootcamp Graduation weekend in Sept. of 1994. I went through the 331st BMTS otherwise known as "Disneyland".
Here's me as a brandnew A1C in front of the F-86.
This is for the person that said I was full of crap and that there were no Jack Rabbits on Lackland. These Jack Rabbits had just finished getting friendly in front of the P-51H. And don't let the picture fool you. Those suckers are big. Larger than you house cat.

I think the P-38 is a fiberglass fake. Anyone got any info on that?

Fire Ants I would guess, at least in East Texas...starting to see a few cottontails again though...The P-38 does look like a replica but the others are definetly real. Wonder what if anything has happened to the row of Thuds. I've seen pics of these before...

I also remember seeing jackrabbits one time when I was on Lackland several years back. Don't know about them currently at Lackland, but I do know that they've seemed to have been making a comeback on the family ranch of late.
I flew over Lackland last weekend (the end of September) just before I got my new camera. Saw a lot of interesting statics I didn't know were there. Hope to fly over again sometime. The fuselage and part of the wings of the XC-99 are still partially there.

There are plenty of jack rabbits on Ellington Field. Very few predators to keep them down.

Don't recall my "source" (can't find my notes, darn it), so my memory may be wrong.
The P38 on the poles at Lackland is a Replica, painted (as of April '99 anyway) as jandina V, a P38 assigned to Major Jay Thorpe Cock Robbins, deputy commander, 8th FG, 5AF, while he was flying with 80FS, PTO.
If I am wrong, I am sure that someone will correct me.

I could see Fire Ants taking over the buroughs. They were all over the place when I was last there. A buddy of mine made the mistake of taking a break and having a seat on the curb. He jumped up and started swatting his clothes with his hat. Appearently they had got on to him real bad that he ended up having to run into the nearest building strip his uniform of in the restroom.

Back in 1990 when I was stationed at Fort Hood Texas we were out in the field on a two week training excercise. I made the mistake one night of using my gas mask as a pillow and placing it on top of a fire ant nest (kind of hard to see the small ones in the dark). Needless to say it took only a matter of seconds for the ants to get my attention and show their displeasure!!

Such a shame that the P-51H and F-82 are still sat outside exposed to the elements. 
Whilst it's good to see them displayed rather than being scrapped at the end of their service lives along with most examples, hopefully one day they'll end up restored and under cover.

Don't forget the Pinball P-63, Mike. Of all of them it is probably the most rare at Lackland. It still has its armored skin and lights.
