Fri Oct 13, 2006 11:17 am

Someone mentioned in an earlier post seeing a F6 broke in half.
Now, I've never seen that but I do have a photo!

dat be me!!! i saw the hellcat broke in 1/2..... repeatedly over the years!!!! come on jack!!! you must have seen that film footage of the hellcat hitting the carrier island upon a hard landing, it's 1 of the most famous & regularly seen pieces of ww 2 footage on the documentaries etc.

come to think of it.... i'd bet that the hellcat taking the swim is from the crash i described!!! it looks from the swimming angle to be where it broke in 1/2 on film, + it didn't catch fire either, same as jack's pic is lacking burn marks.

come to think of it I have a couple photos of Lt Black of VF-5 in F-27 doing that.
The one your referring to is a different sequence.
The later 2 instances the F6s stayed on the deck though.

I think the backround on this photo is the ocean.

The guy swimming for his life is a definite tip-off.

The film clip of the Hellcat hitting the carrier island was used in "Midway". Supposed to have been Heston's son flying it.

Mudge the observant

Tom, I'm pretty sure the Hellcat came to rest on the carriers deck in that footage. A good a
reason as any to watch the footage again!

Ya but was it a F6, F9F, SBD, TBF, Concorde or the Space Shuttle?

correct, i'm implying that it was shoved into the drink after it hit the carrier island.

In Midway? I believe it was all of those at one point or another.
