Good news. Recently, I did a search for an update to the 2002 news story that said that McGoon might have been found. Now we know.

RIP to all allies who died in that war.

Gentlemen,

I am preparing an article for the AAHS journal on a Pittsburgh veteran who flew for the OSS and is now deceased. He flew Stinson L-5s for the OSS in China from 1945 to 1948. Both he and McGoon flew OSS officers into Manchuria to visit the 'tent city' of the Red Chinese Communists.

He and McGoon sat together and the end of a 'U'shaped table. At the head sat Cho Enlai and Maotse Tung, side-by-side, each flanked by an OSS officer fluent in Chinese. Glenn Palmer, the pilot had no idea of what was said, but the dinner conferences lasted about two hours. He and McGoon then flew the OSS officers back to China.

Palmer made several trips flying OSS officers to the 'tent city".

Palmer had high praise for McGoon's flying ability, especially the Stinson L-5 in and out of dirt roads, tennis courts and dry river beds. He said McGoon was a 'living legend' then at that time.

I waited three months after Palmer passed away and approached his second family to gain access to his photo ablum. By this time they disposed of it in the garbage.

I learned my lesson. I now wait a week after a veteran dies before approaching the family members to access any photos and albums.

Yours very tuly,
Norman Malayney

Gee Norm,
Don't wait.
I meet one family here in town who threw everything away
before the man passed away. I pulled his medals out of their trash and took them to him at his nursing home!
