I called Mike minutes after I hung up with Peter and asked him if he would join me on an adventure to Russia to acquire a Messerschmitt 109. Once again, he laughed at me. I didn't really know anyone else who traveled as often as Mike, or who had the expertise to recognize if I was really buying a Messerschmitt 109 or a pile of junk. I practically begged him to join me - even bribing him by saying that we could come back through London for an extra day and could meet up with a mutual German friend of ours. Eventually, he began to take interest. He agreed to join me - but only for the three days that I had promised...

Before we hung up, he asked me what my wife thought about a return trip to Russia. I told him that I was just about to go buy a few dozen roses - to improve the odds of approval - but that his agreeing to go with me would go a long way with her. Hopefully.

Second that, interesting perspective on hunting down wrecks in Russia. Now if only Jim Pearce would publish his, something mooted a few years ago.

Yup.. it really is a great read.. I like the way they describe all the paranoia and the dear Olga! I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the trials of a salvage operation.

I just finished reading this book and wow, what an adventure. I am glad that I didn't travel to Russia, sounds pretty scary!

With all those books on folks discovering lost/forgotten cars....Cobra/Hemi/Corvette/Vincent in the Barn, Lost Hot Rods, etc. I 'd expect a good book on warbirds recovery might have generate some interest outside the hobby as well.

Thanks for all the kind words on the book. Book two is about complete, this time instead of dealing with the Mafia and KGB, we are dealing with head hunters and stone money. All true, as it happened.

Thanks to this thread. I didn't know of the book and ordered it and it made for enjoyable reading on a couple of recent trips. The book is a wild ride and I had no idea how it would end. (Not going to spoil it for prospective book buyers).
