I've loved the PT-22 the second I first saw one. I hope to see one fly someday! Soesn't seem to be too many around the Northeast.
I'd have to do some looking around to see if that is truely my pick.

Paul, I think your entry is all full of holes !
Stearman is nice, I'll grant you that but the man said "best looking".
I'm not sure what to say about the first entry.

I think I'd have to second the Ryan STM/PT-20 nomination (that being the Menasco-engined, wheel-spatted variant like that gorgeous Dutch-marked restoration near the top of the thread). Wires and fabric AND highly polished alloy, pure "art deco" style.
Stretching things a bit both directions...the Hawker Hart Trainer (a few still active in '39) or the Spitfire TrVIII/T9 (surely on the drawing board in '45, and converted from wartime airframes).
As to that Hanriot twin the thread started with...it isn't that often I see a pic of an airplane of that period and think "what the deuce is that?" For starters I didn't realize Hanriot was still an aircraft manufacturer that late. What a fascinating-looking machine. Do any survive (the Finnish markings suggest something might...rarities seem to "hang on" well in Finland)? And what was its history?

I've always been partial to the DH-82 Tiger Moth!
It's a sweet looking biplane!
