As far as a story behind it...I seem to recall hearing about an american squadron where the pilots tried to out do one another with wild paint schemes. I think this was in the immediate post war period. Or I could be totally wrong...

This is an often published picture, and it has long been a frustration of modelers that nobody knows what colors it is.

wow!!! if a modeler tackled that paint scheme he'd have balls like boulders just to attempt it!!!! i wonder if the weight of all that paint on the fabric / dope factored in the plane's performance???

I don't know anything about this image. I just saw it and grabbed it.
Since it's part bird and part fish I guess it'd be a fly'in fish??
This is post-WWI though. You can tell by the insignia on the wings.
This scheme would look great on a cowled Stearman, AT-6 or
a Sea Fury.
