Military Draft

Sat Nov 18, 2006 3:27 pm

Should the United States bring the draft back? Why or why not. Also if they did bring it back should women be included? Why or why not.

The reason I'm asking this is I'm doing a paper for my College English class.

They should re-institute the draft, and make a provision there, barring anyone with money, to be able to get a deferment or to find a cozy job.

Everyone should serve, and if it comes to combat, everyone should go, regardless of daddy's social or financial situation.

I think if the Draft becomes a necessity for the defense of the country then yes, otherwise no. One of the things the American men and women in Iraq are fighting for is Freedom. That freedom is diminished when you are forced to serve. As for women in combat, if they can pass the same requirements as men then they should be allowed to go. This BS about men being overprotective of women will never go away unless we integrate both sexes.

I do think we should form a Foreign Legion. Allow people the chance to earn American Citizenship. Possibly for thier immediate family as well.

If we need to have a draft, I think it is time to figure out "why do we need it again?" by that I mean why don't people want to defend this country and what ways has the Military stopped being competitive to the rest of society (pay, befits retirements...).

With the standards that the military requires these days I don't see the draft being a great idea or very helpful (to the military and the country).

Draft

You can see that virtually no candidate, no matter how far to the right, is willing to campaign on a return to the draft, as this would be political suicide. Could the draft be somethng that instead of war, there be a shorter period of perhaps a year for some sort of public service? People have critisized Bush because he's willing to send other people's kids to die or be maimed(over 7000 that wll need lifetime care) while his are safe at home. I guess I am old fashioned, I don't want to see his daughters there anymore than my sons. They aren't responsible for the lies of their father. It is interesting that with two exceptions, Congress has funded the war with our taxes, but not their children.

This might, or might not be off topic, but,

I am a fan of the Robert Heinlein perfect world. No draft. But a service organization that includes the military. And,

You cannot vote if you haven't served.

The organization is required to accept everyone who volunteers. There is a place for everyone. But, it is the organizations choice where you go.

Service=Citizenship

I like it because everyone who votes will have at least one common experience together. I like it because politicians only truly have to pander to people with whom they have had that common experience.

On Topic, No there should not be a draft.
I had a hard enough time with the "I don't care, I'm only here for 2-3 years, then I'm going to college", dangerous, piece of sh1t slacker, permadink quals losers, without forcing more people around me who truly do not want to be there.

On the boat, you could not get away from them, and you had to watch them 24 hours a day to make sure they didn't kill everyone through their carelessness.

In the Army, you had to make sure those retards stayed in front of you so they could not shoot you by accident or shift fire on to you, and try to make sure they don't have a radio so they cannot call fire onto you.

Draft- No way dude.

Thanks for the responses. Keep'em up!

I just heard on the news that a representative named Rangle was to bring it back and this time raise the age to 42 and include women. However this one would be different as not everyone would be drafted into the military. Some people would have to do federal work such as at a school or in a post office. :x

Except Charles Rangel as warbirguy mentions (who happens to be a Democrat!).

The only reason I can think of that we would need a draft is if the US wanted to send all the Hippies out of the country again (with apologies to Canadians, I wouldn't wish this on anyone).

I think that national service is a good thing. It builds character and teaches responsibility and discipline. I think this would be a good thing for a large portion of our society. That being said, I like the idea of an all volunteer military. You only get the people that want to be there that way and you don't have to worry about deferment schemes.

After 9/11/01 I think there were sufficient numbers of people volunteering so I think they'll come in times of need. When you don't have the need (wars), what will you do with all the people? I had to register for the draft many years ago, but since they weren't drafting anyone what was the point?

I like that concept as well but your should have a choice, Military or something like AmeriCorps

All I know is that the Pentagon is running out of options when it comes to rotating the troops in and out of Iraq & Aghanstain. Some of the active duty Army soldiers are now preping for their 3rd tour! Does anybody know what this does to moral when you're on repeated deployments???

The only reason the Army has been able to maintain the troop levels is because they are showering the troops with $20,000 & $30,000 enlistement/re-enlistment bonuses, increasing the enlistment age, the stop-loss policy, and continuing to rely on the Guard & Reserves.

That makes about as much sense as the opposite rule: those who have served in the miltary may NOT vote. (I guess draftees would be exempted.) After all, corporations don't let their security guards pick the CEO.

I'm sure, however, that excluding either the servers or the non-servers would give us worse government than we have now. If such a thing is possible.

Here is example of Democratic Party deceit and the mainstream media collusion by omitting important facts. Congressman Rangel submitted this same bill a couple of years ago and supported it with racist accusations. He claimed that minorities were more likely to join the military under an all volunteer force and more likely to die in combat. He claimed racism is the heart of the voluntary force policy. This is really an attempt to block the president's power to use the military (especially in Iraq). When the Republicans called his bluff and brought the bill to the House floor for a vote, it was defeated overwhelmingly, including a no vote from its author, Congressman Rangel. Do you see any of this important history in the MSNBC article? Why not?

Here are a couple of Wall Street Journal editorials about the issue:

Rangel to introduce bill reviving military draft
Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 under a bill Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, will introduce next year.

my opinion......yes to a draft. kids today are soft, spoiled, no discipline, no values, no love of country, all they believe in is me me me me!!!! they need to give something back. no, i never served, but i'm cut off the same cloth as my 90 year old dad. the draft would make it fair for all, regardless of social class money etc. no special priveleges, loop holes etc for deferment. it's why israel, for the tiny nation it is, has the most kick assed bad assed mo fo's on the planet for troops. on the other hand........ the best performing soldiers are the ones that want to be their!! it's a double edged sword!! my biggest regret & mistake of my life is that i didn't serve. i am truelly sorry for that, however i try to make up for it in other ways. today's kids by & large don't think that way. i put 4 of my own kids on this planet too, but they just didn't absorb the values i tried to instill. don't get me wrong, they are good kids, as are millions of others, but alot of them have convoluted logic.

BDK, don't see how your accusation about the media is true. CNN reported tonight about Rangle's bill in 2004 where it was defeated 402 to 2. Don't see how this is Democratic deceit as even though Gop broght it to a vote, both parties overwhelmignly voted it down.
