Hi, I am new in this forum. I am since 1995 a collector of WWII aircraft-parts. I find the most of the parts with my metaldetector.

First question : is it possible to show some pictures in my message on this forum, I see no options for this picture-function ??.

I have a nice WWII Bakelite Bomb Rack in my collection but I do not know if it is used and made by the RAF or by the USAAF ?, and if it is used for a fighter or a bomber. On the backside ( see photo ) are some marks/numbers in the Bakelite and on the blue-grey paint is stamped in red paint the text : 550 ? LB BOMB MAX. LOAD . Is there somebody who can help me with more information ( perhaps a picture or a internetlink ) ?. Thanks for your help. Kind Regards from Europe : Seeadler

I know there are plenty of helpful people here that would very much like to see the photos!

But why is this so complecated ?, why is there not a function on this forum for uploading pictures ?......

Mainly because I cannot afford to provide the space or bandwidth necessary to allow everyone to host pictures on our servers. Especially when services like photobucket are free.

This site generates too much traffic to allow that. It was considered some time ago, but the revenue generated by the site basically covers the expenses of the site. By allowing integrated posting of pictures it would mean some other section would have to be eliminated and projects like the Technical Manual Library would be shelved.

I have search on Google for a picture of a Bomb Rack for a P-51 B/C but I have find only one picture and this rack is not the same as my Bomb Rack.

If you look closely at the 4th photo in your slide show, you will see what I believe to be a North American Aviation, Inc. part number - 97-63013. Breaking down NAA's part number system, the first two numbers are the North American Charge Number (aircraft type) and the last five digits are the NAA Drawing Number/Part Number.

97 is the charge number for the A-36, the ground attack version of the Allison engined P-51A. Drawing/Part Numbers in the 60000 range are armament parts.

Therefore, I believe the bomb rack that you have was designed for the North American Aviation A-36. It may very well have been used on other North American aircraft. It is almost certain that this part was built in the U.S.

This is a picture of the later type of carrier you will find fitted to many current airworthy D model P-51's. Both this and the earlier type you have are made in the USA. The Fighter Collection's razor-back P-51 has fitted examples of the early type carrier.
