we all know about the ww 2 era movie stars who served in the armed forces such as gable, stewart, etc. how about after ww 2 celebrities / movie stars who served??? jimmy stewart not included, he's considered ww 2 in my book. i'd bet not to many can be named!!!

Actor Dean Paul Martin (son of Dean Martin) flew F-4s with the CA ANG

Kris Kristofferson's father was an Air Force general who pushed his son to a military career. Kris was a Golden Gloves boxer and went to Pomona College in California. From there, he earned a Rhodes scholarship to study literature at Oxford. He ultimately joined the army and achieved the rank of captain. He became a helicopter pilot, which served him well later. In 1965 he resigned his commission to pursue songwriting. He had just been assigned to become a teacher at West Point. He got a job sweeping floors in Nashville studios. There he met Johnny Cash, who initially took some of his songs but ignored them. He was also working as a commercial 'copter pilot at the time. He got Cash's attention when he landed his helicopter in Cash's yard and gave him some more tapes. Cash then recorded Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down", which went was voted 1970's Song Of The Year by the Country Music Association. Kris was noted for his heavy boozing. He lost his helicopter pilot job when he passed out at the controls, and his drinking ruined his marriage to singer Rita Coolidge, when he was reaching a bottle and half of Jack Daniels daily.

Good topic! Eric, that's interesting about K. K., just can't pictuere him at West Point, he must be multifaceted. I never met him, but did see Janis Joplin with her personal bottle at a party in Austin in the 60's. I once was asked to take J. Stewart for a Spit flight, but the timing did not work out. I don't know if he ever served, but John Denver was a pilot before he was a celeb and his Dad was USAF. Anybody got any famous ladies who also served?

Here are a few for you:

Col. and Senator John Glenn - astronaut and politician. U.S. Senator (D) from Ohio for four terms starting in 1974; He became the oldest person to travel into space in 1998. Served in the Corps from 1943-1964. He flew 59 missions in WWII and 90 missions in Korea. He was a test pilot from 1954-1959. He became the first American to orbit the earth in his space capsule Friendship 7 in 1962.

Ted Williams (baseball star - Boston Red Sox) served as a US Marine pilot during both World War II and the Korean War, serving in the same unit (VMF-311) during both wars. During WWII he flew propeller driven (F4U Corsair) aircraft; after being recalled for active duty for Korea, he transitioned to jet (F9F Panther) aircraft. Flew 37 combat missions in Korea.

Ed McMahon (entertainer - TVs Tonight Show) - During World War II he was trained as a Marine fighter pilot, and also served as a flight instructor and test pilot. He was discharged in 1946, remaining in the reserves.

After college, McMahon continued his military career in 1952 and was sent to Korea in February 1953. He flew unarmed OY-1 Birddogs on 85 tactical air control and artillery spotting missions. He remained in the Marine reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1983, and was then commissioned as Brigadier General in the California Air National Guard.

This doesn't actually count, because she wasn't a movie/TV star, but WASP Marjorie Kumler was the technical advisor on the 1943-44 film Ladies Courageous about the WAFS. It starred Loretta Young, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Diana Barrymore -- and was a credited role for Blake Edwards as "Pilot."
