Last Resort

Sun Dec 03, 2006 2:21 am

according to Steve Birdsall's "Saga of the Superfortress", the B-29 next to Last Resort exploded as a result of a frag unloading accident; a frag dropped and went off, the fire could not be extinguished, and the whole thing went up. IIRC, total fatalities were 6 + 1 later. Last Resort was declared unrepairable & salvaged.

Last Resort had an interesting flight that resulted in it putting down in a field in China, after which it was shot-up by Japanese planes; locals supplied parts from a previously wrecked B-29 + fuel in drums and laid out over 4000 railroad ties on the soft parts of the field to improvise a runway. She got home from that one.

I'll scan the relevent pages if anyone is interested in the unabridged version...

cheers
