Believe it or not "CHERRY GIRL" , F-105D S/N 61-0069 still exists and is well cared for by the "Strategic Air and Space Museum" in Nebraska.

Although she no longer carries her "Cherry Girl" motif. More than likely for reasons of political correctness.

In regards to the "Cherry Girl" & other nose art...When I was building an F-105 for Mr. Bliss...the after market decals had those same two ladies. So I got to reading about it,..They were painted on top like that so that the refueling receptor was in a very well placed area (( :wink: )). They wanted to make sure that the refueling boom operator was going to contect and hit his mark without any doubts!!...Good way to make sure you get some fuel! :lol:

There are numerous urban legend stories that regard fighter guys who ran out of gas while trying to get on the boom -- pretty sure that's the story with "kittie Galore".

Of course, there's also the "would it help if I put a little hair around it?" line...

The first and only time I ever saw a full F-8 display was at the 1987 RIAT at RAF Fairford.

Here's the Aeronavale F-8E on VERY short curved finals to the runway after it's stunning solo display.

I believe that the two F-8s in Washington belonged to Thunderbird Aviation from the Phoenix area. They were sold through a bankruptcy situation, I believe.

They were parked up at Deer Valley airport for quite a while.

My understanding was that there was real delicate dance between the faster F-105s, F-100s, F-8s etc. and the slower KC-97 tankers

The fighters slowed down as best as they could while the tankers were going balls out to try and stay ahead of them. This made the act of refueling cantankerous at best.

this of course was reduced as more KC-135s arrive on deck to replace the KC-97s. If I'm not mistaken I think early in the war some KB-50Js also augmented refueling operations.
