CF used soft start carts--the CF T-33s had two smal NiCad batteries good for only six self-starts, then they had to be pulled and deep cycled or thrown in a land fill. I installed three large Gill gel batteries so I can start without an external power cart. Yah, the Nene chugs on start--more so if if OAT and/or field elevation is high. A little chugging is ok...I think I used that line in college.

What paint scheme are the recently purchased tbirds going to have? will any of them retain their service colors? how about that ex AETE bird?

Hey Crystal Lakes,
Do you have any more information about the re-engining with the CF-700? What was the cost involved with that ? It seems fuel burn is the only staggering negative with the T-bird. Did you guys look at putting a thrust reverser, anti-lock brakes or any other mods on your plane?
I saw where the operating cost for one CF700 is about $57 USD per hour. If that saves 150gph then it would definitely be worthwhile. Has anyone ever looked at putting vortex generators on the wing?

I dont remember the cost, it was an engine we got from a parted out falcon 20. We dont need all those fire detectors anymore. The problem wasnt stopping it was the take off run. On a hot day you could use about 6000 ft. of runway with the alison. We took the nicad batteries out and installed optima batteries. The CF700 starts much easier than the alison also. We had to do some experimenting with the tailpipe to get the most thrust. I think the rear fan quiets the engine some also.

599 and 610 are low-vis grey, 564 is black, and 452 (AETE) is red, white, and blue.

In talking to the new owners recently, the paint scheme subject didn't come up. Right now they're consumed with completing the purchase transaction, importation, gov't approvals, ferry flights, spares aquisition and consultations with maintenance shop Heritage Aero on maintenance/licensing issues. I'll ask them about paint schemes but I don't see any significant near term changes for the T-33 coming to WI. The owner of the three in MA was pleasantly surprised he was awarded that many. IMHO I'm not betting he'll keep all of them in the long term, but he hasn't said anything definitive that way either. When I bought mine through Lancaster, I had to swear on a blood oath that I wouln't put any Canadian national markings back on the airplane--of course the CF was still flying T-33s at that time so maybe that's why. Don't know if the recent buyers are bound by the same restriction, or if I still am for that matter.

I thought the black looked really cool. Canada is one of the few places where that's practical...well, maybe here in Wisconsin too. Mine's still painted in it's original Canadian Forces NATO camoflauge scheme from it's tour at Baden Solingen Germany before going to it's final assignment at 434 Squadron at CFB Greenwood Nova Scotia. They never got around to repainting it when it came back from Germany. It was the only one in painted this way of the aircraft auctioned off from 2002-present.

Paul,

I'm glad to know where that one ended up and that it kept those colours! While it was sitting in Mtnview I always though it was one of the sharper looking paint schemes.

Too bad it doesnt' still have the low vis CF markings, but I can understand why they wouldn't want you to put them on while they CF still had them in service.

Love to get a look at her again some day. Whats the closest to Ontario that you usually find yourself with the old bird in the average season?

Right now if plans come together like I hope for 2007, Thunder Over Michigan and the Eagle River WI (KEGV) fly-in are the closest I plan to be near Ontario. That could change, but those two are the likely to be the closest. Otherwise if you ever get to the Milwaukee WI area, you're more than welcome to come to my hangar at Waukesha (KUES) for a visit.
