Looks like a Fokker DR1 and a Nieuport 17 to me. Could be mistaken, however. These images appeared on an unrelated site and I'd never heard of the incident. Hope all involved were okay.

Ouch...

Don't know anything about the incident, but several aircraft in
other pictures from that page have OM- registrations
(OM- = former Chekoslovakia)

I was told that even though the Nieuport replica essentially dove into the ground shortly after the pictures were taken the pilot was in remarkably good shape. I was told he walked away with some assistance.

Afraid I don't have any details on specifically who the aircraft belong to though.

Hey, I looked it up on the web (so it has to be accurate/true!) :D

http://www.airportcitycodes.com/aaa/IRPDB.html

says OM- is for (former) Czechoslovakia (emphasis on former).

OK- is for the (current) Czech Republic.

Is this not the case?

FWIW, someone else said the wreck happened in '81....

Here is the video of it I believe this happened this year:

http://www.markiza.sk/tv_archiv/?19383d=30...amp;19383v=8639

Quote:
"80% Nieuport gets it's tail feathers chopped off by an 80% Dr1. Nieuport rolls up and over and dives straight in. Miraculously, the pilot survived with a broken leg, arm and a concussion. Tripe was able to land safely. Apparently the sun was in the eyes of the Tripe pilot, and he never saw the Nieuport."

P.S. I'd catch the news every evening if my news had the anchor in the video. Even if I couldn't understand her

How the guy in the Nieuport survived at that rate of descent is beyond me.

The impact and very quick landing of the DR1 is almost as amazing!

My first reaction was to think it was a staged stunt from 'Flyboys'.

Absolutely incredible.

I'll bet the Nieuport pilot was glad he was wearing his brown pants!!!!

A staged stunt? You gotta be kidding! the whole tail is severed. No airplane can fly with that nose high pitch for very long. To me it looks like he would have done a stall spin, maybe a flat spin from the circumstances.
If he survived then they must have been really close to the ground when they made contact. The undisturbed earth around the neiuport looks like he spun in to me!

I did say my first reaction was to think it was from Flyboys as there is a sequence eerily similar btwn a DR1 and a Nieuport including splinters flying and all. Of course that quickly evaporated when viewing the last frame in the sequence and the video. Guess I should have expanded on that originally in my post for those of us who need to give up caffeine.
