Some picture, taken in January 2005, in the Sabena Old Timer (SOT) Hangar, at Brussels Airport.

Westland Lysander/V9546 OO-SOT in restoration after been crashed in 2001, during a emergency landing.

Last info: Damages on the fuselage, the landing gear and the left wing are fixed.
First flight postponed from 2006 to 2007, due of relocation of the association.

In the background: The fuselage of the Lodestar. The Restoration has been delayed after the crash of the Lysander.

The last news found about this association (February 2007)
The restoration of the Lodestar will restart in 2008, with a plan of 4 years restorations.
They looks for volunters, they are 20 miles from my home, but unfortunatly they only work during week hours :-(

The Sabena Old timers made good progress to bring their Lysander to airworthy. Hope to fly in a few months according somes "rumors"

What is the serial number of the Mercury engine attached to the airframe? When the RCAF Lysanders were sold surplus, the Mercury engine serial number was noted on the lower right-hand corner of the respective RCAF aircaft record card. If the Belgium aircraft has the original engine for that airfame, then the identity can be positively proven. If the engine is from a Bolingbroke, then the serial number will detail from which Bolingbroke the engine came from.

The majority of ex-RCAF Lysanders currently flying or on static display have bogus RCAF serial numbers. The key to identity is if the airframe has the original engine attached. The CWH, Hamilton, Ontario, Lysander did and its RCAF identity is proven correct.

Hum, I'm not in direct relation with the people who work on the plane.
But according, all the trouble they have with the plane: i doubt that the engine is still the original one.
(When it hard landed in 2001, it was with a engine failure, and it was not the first time it happen: this last flight was in fact a test flight after an other engine trouble)


I know that both the planes (the 00-SOT flying, and the static one in restoration) came from Canada.

Wow, fantastic news, Iclo! Thanks for the info. Be sure to keep us updated on that, as probably most of us, except for our Canadian members, don't speak French, so it's not easy for us to get news on the French aviation scene.

Yes, It was a long terme restoration (The plane crash landed in 2001)

From what I heard and red, the damage were more important that the pictures available on the net in 2001 could show: the left wing and fuselage were "folded" and the landing gear need to be replaced.

And the association had to deal with several other difficulties:
- The Sabena went bankrupt, so they loose one of their support.
- The people in charge of liquidation of the Sabena tried one time to seize the plane to sold it. A
Arguing that the plane was the property of the airline. Fortunaltly it was false and the association was able to prove it.
- The Lysander was on loan from the Belgian Army museum of Brussel with a deal that when the plane would be grounded it will go to static exposition in the museum (in the center of Bruxelles) So they need to found, acquire and restore for static display a second Lysander to "solve the deal"
- they lost their place in the hangar and had to move to an other smaller hangar.

Lots of challenge for this small but friendly association.
So when the plane will made its first flight, I will be doubling happy: first to see this rare bird in the sky, and secondly to all the people involved in its restoration: lots of them are retired mechanic and some of them passaed away with the years and will never seen this plane flight again :?
