Whats the story on the Planes of Fame Bf-109G-10? Is it owned by POF? Is it a complete a/c or put together from different parts, etc.? Is the engine in it still rebuildable? Any good pics of it, cockpit shots?

Regards,
Mike

Original aircraft owned by the Planes of Fame, has engine and engine mounted cannon, although prop and spinner fibreglas copies as originals lost. Full story along with other Gustavs in the third part of the 109 Survivor series 'Classic Wings' Issue 42.

There is a '109 in our hangar in St. Louis. It is complete and authentic. Send me your email address for photos.

From what I recall the engine was sent to Germany to get a "doanted" rebuild and it returned with a spray bomb overhaul and all the good internal parts swapped for unserviceable parts. That is the hearsay I can relate anyways.

I have some photos taken in 2005. They are not great. You can find the link to the Webshots album from the Features page of www.AerialVisuals.ca.

Yikes!!!!, Sorry but I tremble when I see all wood hangars. Is it a Messerschmitt or CASA?

I believe this the aircraft being looked after by Joe Vaughn for Steve Linsenmeyer. It was purchased from a guy called Hans Lohse (sp?) in Germany and was originally the wrecked Buchon conversion that crashed under the ownership of the Messerschmitt foundation. Lohse rebuilt it using many original parts, but still a hybrid.

Chris, The good thing about wooden hangars is the high water marks show up well. Check out the hangar walls in the pictures. During the Great Flood of 1993, this baby had about 5 feet of water in it!

Is the 109 at Smart Field? Is it ever open to public viewing?

I'm going to be St. Louis a time or two this spring and most likely again this summer. I'm always looking for aviation items to photograph. I hope to make Creve Coeuer this year.

Yes Jeff, the '109 is in the CAF hangar. We have a B-25 and TBM too. You might also go to the transportation museum. Lots of good trains.

My stepfather lives about a mile from the Museum of Transport, so I know it well. I've also been to Smart Field a few times. I have a good buddy who bought a farm on 94 near your field. I'll look up your open hours on one of my future visits to the old home town.
