Whoa, I'm not disputing the history of N49FG!

But there is some misinformation on it here on the WWW.
(apparently by John F's A/P)

But, this is not the LSU P-40, my father told me of it before N49FG even left PNG.
I just was wondering what became of the airframe that was displayed at the Campanile in the 50's.
Ill do some more checking in Baton Rouge, and let you know what I find.

Rogue - You're not alone on this one. A couple of years ago, someone posted on here about actually climbing up in the cockpit when it was on the grounds of LSU in the early 1950s.

I would assume its:

A. In a remote barn, storage facility or hanger
B. Still under the stadium somewhere
C. Scrapped

Back in 1951/52 I was living for a short time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
My buddy in mischief at the time lived on campus with his parents, his dad finishing a degree in Animal Husbandry. We were around 9/10 years old and we were all over the campus getting into things. We had been in the biological lab lookng at all the specimens things floating in jars of formaldehyde. When we left the lab and went outside we found a P-40 on display in the courtyard. Of course this goes hand to hand with LSU being the Tigers and of course the state's proud association with General Chennault. We crawled all over it. The canopy was open so we had access to the cockpit as well as all the rest of the elements, rain & hail etc. I've since E-mailed the University inquiring about the plane but have never gotten a response.
Is there any way of finding out if this P-40 is flying today. I don't have any serial numbers only the time frame.

This A/C served in the 8th FS 49th FG and is a genuine combat vet.
I'm working on some good authentic markings from the 8th to give John some ideas for the paint scheme.

How about Joe Littleton or Danny Moore? They were good ole Louisiana boys. Right?

Those sure are attractive schemes with the white tail and leading edge.
Checkertail is just a plus.

I'm going to be putting together a Skyshark 1/5th scale P-40N ARF that I won in a raffle and was looking online for some pictures of different color schemes. While searching, I ran across this website that has many pictures of the former LSU P-40N that is being restored that Jack started this thread with.

Back many years ago I had heard of a P-40 airplane that was standing gate guard duty at the Louisiana State University Engineering Department triangle. Eventually the airplane was disasembled and placed in the a storeroom under the LSU stadium for many years. After that, when the City of Baton Rouge decided to have a navy destoryer brought to town and form a Navy Museum, the airplane fell into the museums hands. Sometime after that, a deal was struck whereas the airplane would be traded off for a mock up/static display P-40, plus a sizable monotary contrubution to the museum. So, now the airplane ends up in Lafayette, Louisiana. All the skins have been removed and new skins, ribs, spars, bulkheads, firewall, and so on are being installed after being cloned or purchased.The engine will be overhauled and all systems made ready to have a safe, flyable P-40N .. I am fortunate enough to have been invited to work on this historical aircraft and what follows is some history and photos from the project.

This is clearly incorrect, the whereabouts of the P-40 at the campanile in 52-53 are still unknown to me.

I am fairly certain there were photos of the P-40 at LSU from the 50s in either Air Classics or Warbirds Intl. back some 12-15 years ago. It strikes me that the caption said the plane went to a static museum later, although I could be off on that last detail.

When you come up with those schemes, could you post them here? I jsut recevied a 1/5th scale P-40N and I want to change it from the Chineese scheme it came with to something US/AU/NZ that is accurate.

I'm thinking about P-40N-5 "The Carolina Belle" 42-104947 that was flown by Ernest A. Harris and scored 7 of his 10 total kills while flying it. The only problem is this is the only picture that I can find of it.
