Reno '88? Eg before the wall fell and all that? Didn't know people were importing MiGs that early (except maybe the USAF). Chinese? Anyway, thanks for the pics

Dean Martin, was flying them along the Canadian border from Burlington, VT back then. 15s, 17s, he even had a 21 at KBED just after desert storm.

CG51, do you remember where and when that shot of "822" was taken?

Rob,

FAA Registry shows 26 MIG 17's in US.

Warbirds of Delaware has a MIG 21 and MIG 23.

Bill

The MiG I would really like to see in this country is the Russian MiG-19/Chinese F-6. I have been told in the past that the twin engine configuration/supersonic capability are reasons we don't see them being imported. There may be other mechanical or technical issues with the MiG-19 that I am not aware of. I really like the MiG-17, but a MiG-19 would be outstanding.

Rob,

A great resource for this type of thing is the Classic Jet Aircraft Association. They are extremely helpful and knowledgable about all of this type of stuff. In fact there are a few members who have flown or at least thought about owning a MIG-29 :D

www.classicjets.org

Check it out!

jwc50, I believe a civilian Mig-19 is scheduled to arrive in the US within the next couple of months. I'll post an update once it comes to pass.

There were several articles about Al Redick and His Mig's along with articles on the FAA's position on Mig ownership in news papers Like the Chicago Tribune from 1987, I have these articles, if anyone would like copies of these send me a PM with you mailing address and I will send out a copy. Thanks, Rob. I hope that this turns about to be true. To see a MiG-19 in the air would be fantastic.

How about a dream Cold War Jet warbird air show someday: MiG-15/MiG-17/MiG-19/MiG-21 and F-86/F-100/F-104/F-4!

Keep us posted with whatever you hear.

I got to meet Dean Martin in Hungary during 1990. Mr, Martin was on a Mig buying trip. I had flown an F-16 to an airshow in Hungary as part of their annual national defense celebration. It was an interesting trip, after landing a line of Hungarian and Soviet Col's and Generals stood at the botton of the cockpit to greet me. I went down the line saluting and shaking each ones hand until the end of the line where a 2 star Russian general stood, he looked exactly like Gen. Burkhalter in the show Hogans Heros. I saluted him but he did not respond except for a hateful stare. I put out my hand for a hand shake but still no response. My Hungarian col escort gently pushed me aside and staring at the Gen. said don't worry he's just a sore loser.
The US air attiche for Hungary told me Mr. Martin was at the base and I was not to talk to him, I didn't ask why. Later in the day my escort said he wanted me to meet someone as we approached 3 Hungarian majors. One of the guys in the majors uniforms was Dean Martin. He stated they made him an honorary major since he was buying their air force. He seemed like a very nice guy. He did in fact end up with several of their Mig-21's.

The Mig-21 at Stead Field in Reno flies. It was up last Friday and Saturday.
Big, noisy and I assume, VERY expensive.
