Setting The Record Straight: George Maudes P-40E

Wed Jan 03, 2007 8:35 pm

Well, over the past few days ive looked over a few topicss on George Maudes P-40E. Seeing that some of the information people have been posting has been wrong, I thought I would start a topic and set the record straight. Below you will find the correct information about the P-40E. (For those who feel the information I post is wrong, im sorry but I must laugh. Because well the information is 100% right from the source, my Grandfather Mr. George Maude.)

 The P-40E was built as a Kittyhawk I for the RAF

 It was then purchased by the British Purchasing Commission and DID NOT fall under any lend-lease agreement and thus received NO US Army Serial Number.

 It was then handed over to the RCAF with the serial AK803 and then was changed to 1034.

 After serving in Alaska it was stripped of its camoflage paint.

 It was then put up in auction in Patricia Bay, BC.

 1034 was purchased by George Maude for only.. (Get this  ).. $50!

 After its purchase it was put on a raft of logs! and pulled over to Saltspring Island, BC by a fishing boat. Image

 Upon reaching Salspring Island, BC the wings where cut off to fit it down the road.

 The P-40E sat on Salspring Island, BC till 1976. Then it was towed back to Patricia Bay, BC by truck. They simple built a wod box in the back of a pickup and put the tail wheel in it. Then loaded it on the ferry and they where off.

 Upon reaching Patricia Bay, BC the P-40E sat in a hager whell the wings where changed out for another pair, all in just 3 days!!

 The P-40E has sat from the day of completion on the Victoria International Airport.

 And here she is today. A beautiful peice of WWII History.

That's cool!!!!!!! 8)

I wonder how many more are out there like that still?

Doubt he would sell it for $5000. If you handed him $5000 he'd probly hand you a tail wheel!

 Im hoping to have pictures of the moving of the P-40E back to Patricia Bay, BC soon! Hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Hello Glenn,

Thanks for posting that, and welcome to the WIX.

This must be one of the few complete, unrestored P-40s still in existance - a very valuable historical reference. Just out of curiousity, has the engine been run since your Grandfather has owned it, do you know?

Wed Jan 03, 2007 8:45 pm

Hey Mike.

Funny you should ask. Yes it has. Hard to say how many times. If I had to guess id say probly about 30-50 times. And ive seen it run once of twice, and what a site it was to see!

Great pics, thanks for sharing them along with the story/information. This
particular P-40 always intriuged me. Is it put on display now and then? I
live relatively close by (Washington State) and would love to
see/photograph it in person....

PS: A good friend of mine always tells me he and I were born 20-30
years too late (hence we missed out on all the good $50 dollar warbird
deals!)

Hey Bela. My Grandfathers P-40E has intrigued me as well. Its not kept on display but it does travel across the airport for photoes and airshows. Id invite you to take pictures but my grandfather usually only allows friends to see it.

Cheers,

Glenn Maude

PS: I agree whole hearedly with you there!

thanks for the straight from the source info.

just out of curiousity, what happened to the original set of (cut-up) wings? were they scrapped, or were they used in a subsequent restoration of a different aircraft?

cheers

Hey Greg.

I beleive that the wings went down to California with John Paul. You could ask his son John Curtiss Paul, he has an account on here. He could clarify it the best for you. But other then that im poisitive they where used on another P-40.

OK, how about 1000 times?

Your grandfather obviously cares for this airplane a great deal. Any idea why he bought it? What attracted him to it? Did he know he would be buying a piece of history at the time or did he just buy it on a lark?

I find it interesting that he would buy it and keep it all these years. There must be a great story there! Quite a family heirloom, eh?

Wow, its amazing what you can find at home. I was searching for some slides my dad has when I came across 4 diffrent newspaper clippings from 1974 about my Grandfathers (George Maude) P-40. These are clippings from the sidney reveiw. Enjoy!
