Would any of you guys care to speculate what the value of the Bejing P-61 would be if tomorrow it magically arrived on the ramp (in private hands) somewhere in the United States?

I don't know anyone who's personally inspected the plane, but I've heard that there is a fair amount of corrosion in the airframe. Even so, what realistic dollar amount do you think a museum/collector would pay for it in its current state?

You're asking the wrong people here.

The only people that can answer that question are the collectors themselves, at the moment they write the check.

As with all these things, it is 'worth' what someone is prepared to pay for it. If more than one collector REALLY want it, the price will go up accordingly.

However rare and exotic, if nobody really wants to take it on as a project, it will sit unsold with a price tag on it (eg TFC's Beaufighter)

As there's no precedent, so no 'market price' for P-61s, any figure will be wild speculation, pure and simple, and therefore meaningless.

I once tried to buy a 1968 Dodge Charger that was sitting in a field rotting away. When I asked how much the guy wanted for it. I was shocked that he replied with $10,000 it was a piece of junk that I was just going to use parts off of. The reason it is still there rotting away is that he wants $10,000 for nothing more than a pattern on how to make one. That is why the P-61 is still there. That P-61 is not worth 1.5 million. If it was, they would have fixed it themselves.

That seems to be the most recent pic I have seen, and that was almost 10 years ago! I don't mean to sound so negative, but it is the fact that they are holding a plane hostage that they stole.

Good point. Had it not been siezed, it would probably have been scrapped...

It may not have been scrapped, but sitting outside like that, it is being slowly destroyed. How did they get in the first place?

A P-61A is on outside display at the Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Engineering in Beijing, China. The aircraft has no known s/n but was one of three P-61As belonging to the 427th Night Fighter Squadron that the Chinese seized in 1945. The aircraft is in very poor condition and probably near the point of structural collapse. The Chinese claim to have two additional P-61s in storage which they have offered for sale for $2,000,000.
