Police Investigate Shooting Death Of World War II Vet
Police Say Gunman Set Fire To Cover Crime

POSTED: 6:19 pm EST January 8, 2007
UPDATED: 6:30 pm EST January 8, 2007

CANTON, Ohio -- Police are investigating the death of a World War II veteran who was fatally shot in his Canton home.

Investigators said it started as a call for the fire department and when it was over, police found themselves investigating the murder of 87-year-old Bennie Angelo, reported NewsChannel5's Tracy Carloss.

"Once you met him, you never forget him," said Angelo's daughter, Rebecca. "He lives in your heart. He was a hero, a war hero. He gave back more to society than he got and never complained."

Angelo survived Pearl Harbor and helped saves lives during the attack.

Police said he was murdered in his home just before midnight Sunday.

"To face the bullets 65 years ago, to be part of this tragedy that could have been avoided," said family friend Carol Parker-Park. "I think if they would have asked he would have given freely. It's just hard to comprehend how anyone could do a horrid thing to a wonderful man and a hero in my eyes."

Police are now searching for the person who shot Angelo and then set the home on fire.

"This individual found by the fire department, he had been shot several times and it appears the fire was set to cover up the crime," She Sgt. Dane McCartney of the Canton police.

Angelo was a member of the Local VFW, was a Stark County veteran of the year and would have turned 88 this month.

The Canton Fire Department said it looks as though the cause of the fire was arson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Canton police. Angelo's family is working on establishing a reward for information on the murder.

This is a very sad deal. It reminds me of what happened to Marion Carl. Godspeed to those affected. :(

I thought of General Carl also.
My wife has an uncle who was a Marine Pilot, who flew with Gen. Carl at Pax. River. He had him sign his logbook.

Me too. All I could think of was how tradgic and senseless. Taken out by one of the very people he laid his life on the line to save 65 years ago.
John

PS: I think anybody who would take you up on your bet would find themselves on the losing end for sure.

I say when they find the guy that did this they send him to Texas. Then you find a really tall tree........ It is a shame that this happens at all let alone to a man that fought for this country.

Problem is there are no tall trees in Texas, except for that I agree completely with the thought

This is terrible.

But to be honest, for anyone to murder an old gentleman, let alone a war vetran is just shameful.

I hope justice prevails.
