The chap who sent us the pics of the Museum aircraft did suggest to his guides that the AirForce may have a Museum on one of its bases, but any mention of the mlitary caused them to shy away from the subject..understandable I guess
He was keen to go back , although I don't know if cruising the childrens playgrounds would be seen as a 'tourist pass time '.....in any country
There was talk the Tim Wallis had something brewing out of North Korea, but haven't heard anything further for a few years.

A few years ago I thought all recoverable hulks etc. had already been recovered. But the more time goes by the more I believe that we are yet to see some very interesting recoveries/finds. Just look at the Harts in Afghanistan for instance.

Well I think there is a bit more out there, outside of the obvious places like Russia.

Are you referring to Indiana Tony's discussion of aircraft in Mongolia?

Back in 1982 or 1984, the propaganda magazine 'Soviet Union' published several brief articles on the Soviet participation in the WWII ALSIB ROUTE, ferrying Lend Lease aircraft from Alaska to Siberia and across to the western battle front.

One article mentions a complete P-40 was found in the late 70's on its landing gear. Apparently, during the ferry flight accross Siberia, it experienced engine problems, and the Soviet pilot landed, with gear down, on the tundra. No damage to the aircraft according to the article. Unable to be rescued, they found the remains of the pilot who had frozen to death.

I suspect the next greatest grave yard of American WWII aircraft currently in existence is in Siberia, scattered somewhere along the old Soviet version of their ALSIB route.

Forgot to mention, I have xerox copies of the articles somewhere in my filing cabinets. I"ll dig them out and list the dates the stories appeared. They also published a map of the ferry route listing the bases each aircraft flew to. in order to reach the ETO.

Battle of Khalkin Gol/Nomonhan ,there are still Trucks and Tanks in the area ,once in a while human remains are discovered as well.

It's a vast dry Desert/Marsh like area ,and a lot of the kit is still in a reasonable state of preservation allegedly.

The area of the battle is vast ,and would require an air search ,but yes ,there is every chance of finding a Claude , there were enough lost!

Definitely stuff in the Russian Far East, The Il-4 that recently went on display at the Victory Museum was recovered from that area, after force landing due to combat with Japanese fighters. In such good condition that it is 90% original after three years of restoration.
