I thought this deserved it's own subject
When you post a subject line with the words crash or down, there are a number of us on here that own, operate or take care of Warbirds. My first thought is did I lose a friend today ? I have alot of friends that fly Mustangs, T-6s, T-28s and Bill with the Spitfire, also others that fly B-17s, B-25s, Corsairs, T-bolts. So when I see a post like that, I take it personal. Unless you have lost someone close to you in a warbird crash, you might not, but I have, and it is not fun having to ID your best friend and pasenger, and tell his wife that he is not coming home.

If you are asking about a WWII crash, please put the date in the subject line, instead of just Mustang crash, you might get more looks without the date, but there are alot of us that loose a few heartbeats when we see the subject line.

I am stepping off the soap box, next speaker please

I fully agree, I have seen these posts and think the same thing, I know many pilots and owners, It's bad enough that we do lose a few each year, seeing a post like that ruins your day! even if it's not true!

Is it any easier/better when you just sit down to relax in front of the tube for the evening, and the tv news anchor comes on with that teaser trailer "VINTAGE FIGHTER CRASHES IN FLAMES AT AIRSHOW film at 11!"

You then wait impatiently til the news comes on and then try to disect the shaky home video clip of the crash to try and figure out who it might have been, the news never gives you any info of value.

At least with our board we have a resource with which to communicate with others the events with a bit more accuracy and information. If there is an accident at your home town airport/airshow that involves a warbird, then yes post it whether you witnessed it in person or a link to your local news. But yes please don't sensationalize otherwise its no better than the film at 11 mentality. Maybe a header that says Accident: or Incident: followed by the location would be appropritate.

Everyone on this board whether pilot or fan has someone they know from a museum or airshow etc..., and it would be good to not be left wondering about their well being. Like everything else we spread the word about the good, the new restorations, and the bad but hopefully not at all in '07!

Pete

I recommed that either this thread or a suggested protocol developed from it be posted as sticky for people to review. This is an extremely sensitive issue for many Wixer's but may not be evident to to newer members of the board. As an "airshow photographer/enthusiast", I know my sensitivity has been enhanced by the comments of Wixer's active with flying. As I've learned about you, I too get a pit in my stomach when there is bad aviation news. Therefore, I hope this thread or a derivative can be used to jump start the sensitivity of those just getting acquainted with aviation.

Shay changed the title and more than that he sent a personal apology message to many of us. That's more than enough. Let's all see if we can find ways this year to cut down on accidents.

Hmm. Yes. I've seen vintage crashes from WWII on here with titles that made me think it was now. This thankfully other than yesterday hasn't happened recently. I missed the original title of the B-17 thread.

I have a better idea, make a section for anything that is old news and for all the requests for information on wartime crashes and such. If it's not breaking news keep it out of the hanger.

First let me begin by apologizing to you all for not thinking of what the title might mean to some, I have always been under the impression that "Down" usually meant out of service, but I was wrong and it will not happen again.

Second, I also should not jump the gun and post the first thing I see somewhere else as this board is pretty well connected and usually is on the forefront of info in the Warbird Community. The posting came from a member of another board who was sharing pics and info on Aussie birds. I did not realize how old the news article was.

And third, I think that on a board of this size with as many viewers as it has that news will sometimes get recycled unintentionally or on purpose to renew a subject. From now on, unless I am totally certain, I will treat any future postings with more care and not blurt out first thing that comes to mind and certainly not think I have something new unless someone tells me otherwise.

Again, terribly sorry

Jesse Chavez
