I have just looked at a bunch of photos of 44-15041, HO-M which was
Lt. Col. J.C. Meyer's Petie 3rd. Invasion stripes on the wings
are not visable in any of the photos.

This a/c was later assigned to Lt. James N. Wood as HO-Z and named Ricky.
2 different photos of the transistion between paint jobs show invasion stripes on
the fuselage in the first but even those are removed in the second.
Clearly no stripes on wings in either photo.
The first photo also shows the plane named Ricky but still with Lt. Col. Meyer's
original victory markings. In the second all but 5 are removed.

Is it safe to assume that Petie 1 & 2 were shot out from under him?

Meyer was the pilot of P-47 HO-M 42-8529 named Lambie.

When transistioned to Mustangs he was then assigned a P-51B,
HO-M 42-106471, named Lambie 2. Many think this was changed to Petie.
Unknown for sure as it was lost on 6/7/44 with another pilot, Lt. Garney.

P-51D HO-M 44-14151 was named Petie 2nd and flown by Meyer.
This was taken over by Lt. Sheldon Heyer and became HO-N.

Meyer then flew P-51D, 44-15041, HO-M, Petie 3rd, till rotating
stateside after a leg injury sustained in a traffic accident with an ammo
carrier, not flying, in early 1945.

44-15041 as mentioned above then went to Lt. Wood who renamed it Ricky

Meyer, the CO of the 487th FS, 352nd FG had 24 aerial victories.
He was awarded the DSC with 2 OLC. The Silver Star with OLC and the
Croix de Guerre.
