Did you know that the Jumo 004 begins its start procedure by pulling the ring in the nose of the cone? Here is a quiz for you: What did pulling that ring do?

Started the putt-putt ie apu

No No No....You've got it all wrong.

It's a draw string like on the dolls. Except when you pull the ME 262's you get to hear Hitler recite Mien Kampf excerpts in the cockpit.

Thanks,

That is a Grumman F7F Tigercat. It used to belong to Mike Bogue and I think it might be for sale now. It also used to be an air tanker with Sis Q and some of its markings are still visible on the left side of the nose and the tanker number is outlined on the tail. There is another shot of her on a previous post. Here is that shot:

Ah... of course. Thank you very much for the reply as well as sharing your photos. And thanks to the Sanders too.

Mr. Raimey, is the 262 owned by Paul allen?

Wed Jan 31, 2007 7:36 pm

No, it's one of the new-builds, I believe this is the one now owned by the Collings Foundation.

Paul Allen's is an original one, and is under rebuild in the UK.

Actually the Collings example, is the airplane still being built in Washington. The 2-seater at Sanders is owned by a judge in Arizona, whose name I don't remember.

Did the genuine one go back to Willow Grove and does anyone know how it is displayed there?

Bill
Yes it went back to Willow Grove and now also has a Roof over it. I heard the Navy was making a list of things they needed to do for it or they would take it back, While it may have only been a move to take it, I think its good that it was saved from display outside again. Someday I need to go down and see it, I did not go when was at the airshow and it was not displayed on the field.

ME 262

Yes the 262 is inside our museum along with beautifully restored P-80 and a Bell 47. This past Sunday while working in the museum I put on one of the Me262 training films we have and people were amazed to watch the pull start on the aircraft. It is funny to watch, it also drips quite a bit of fuel on the ground around the engine. Joe

Has anyone from Collings Foundation inspected the quality of workmanship of their new build 262? I would be curious to know what they think of it.
