Re: Enterprise to NYC???

Does anyone else find it disturbing that Enterprise is going to NYC, when the city has no connection to the Shuttle program at all - and the US Air Airbus that landed in the Hudson, an aircraft that has a very strong, tangible link to the city, has ended up in a South Carolina aviation museum?

Check out the last 8 pages. I'm sure it's in there somewhere.

Yup, but in a nutshell for 67cougar and CaptainTexas, tourist destination intensity numbers were the "metric" in location selection.

Dunno bout the Airbus tho...

I know the answer to why (tourist dollars), but good grief ... that just ain't right.

For a few weeks, it seemed like every time I pulled up a news page, there was a story about the Hudson airbus being on its way to a museum, complete with pictures of it on a trailer. I do not know if it was really enroute that long or if it just was dragged out in the media. I thought it was going to North Carolina but maybe it was South Carolina. Either way, it does seem like NYC would be a better fit for the airbus but I do not see that as anything I would drive to see specifically.

Really...? Does nobody remember that the Airbus was on its way TO the Carolinas when it encountered the birds on takeoff in NYC? That's the reason the museum there even wanted it at all...

I had not thought of that, thanks for the information! I do not think I even knew where it was heading when the crash happened.

The decision on both Enterprise and Endeavour was more political than anything else. Being on the bad side of Senators Schumer, Boxer and Feinstein (not to mention all the members of the House of Reps from those states) is not a place NASA wants to be.

Ohio's and Washington State's Congressional delegations (both House and Senate) don't carry as much weight. Texas is going to support NASA regardless, given the employment base that exists at Johnson.

In any event, while NYC may be an overall larger tourist draw than Dayton, but Intrepid still has less (by a few hundred thou, I think) visitors every year than NMUSAF does. Will be interesting to see if having Enterprise produces anything more than a temporary bump in Intrepid's annual visitorship.
