Just a few random thoughts.

First, I agree about current vs. from the old catalogues....however, perhaps that is a category to be determined. Say, someone finally decides to go through all those old slides or negatives from the 60s or 70s and find a treasure trove. Should they be excluded because they waited too long to include them in the competition? Specifically if they are good, and deserving of a real comparison to recent pictures?

My next question comes in the form of category. Let's eval the above post where L birds get looked at....how do you define the category? What if I have the most incredible Navion shot...Does that count?.......Point being, if someone wants to "SPONSOR" a photograph competition for a "SPECIFIC GENRE" then, let it be on that alone. IF, and only IF we can find enough to get a bunch of categories then great. However, if not, then lets go with the idea that you have places for a general WARBIRD photo contest, and then you have prizes for specific categories, which can be entered individually or as a whole....

Lastly, we are very lucky to have a bunch of people who freely post "Their" pictures on this forum for all to appreciate. This "competition" should not be put in a light that discourages people from providing the information that we have all gotten accustommed to. IF it does, then it only distracts from the value of this site.

I believe that a limit should be set on submissions, that prizes should be clearly appointed for what is going to be awarded as a prize shot, and that a reasonable period for submission be available (not by tomorrow at 2, but you have the next 20 days, ending at ...).

The EAA has a great contest, as does AVweek. Not that we should get a magazine sponsor, but perhaps the rules, and guidelines are already out there for creating the foundation.

Lastly.....Ownership?......

I guess it's only fair that I can't win my own prize, but I'd certainly compete for the other categories with an L-bird shot.
As far as the L-birds question - I'd be willing to do a separate category for both - one for US and one for foreign.

Again, as this is about fun rather than getting silly, I can't see any problem in you picking 'the best L bird shot' from the competition's entries while excluding any of your own for your own prize. It would be rather obvious if you award it to yourself, and we'll point it out if you miss it. (Note that all winners will be announced...)

Of course your L bird shots would still be in line for any other prizes...

I'd also consider (interest, folks? I've got a book in mind...) doing a different category with a different prize for best reenacted aircraft scene (ie. not the kissing sailor and it could be airborne OR on the ground) from a WWII photo - markings and aircraft details could differ - and you'd have to post a copy of the WWII picture as well. On second thought maybe someone else should co-sponsor it... 'cause I have a few ideas. If not, I'll sponsor it.

It's a neat idea Ryan, but it could be just a bit difficult to manage as you've got to provide/link a photo that's not yours that's not in the competition.

How about best recreation of a period effect?

No problemo. Doesn't matter when the pic was taken, it just needs to be a warbird (see earlier definition) NOT a then current service aircraft.

If someone wants to award a prize for the 'best pre 19xx' shot, they're welcome.

It's up to the prize sponsor - simple. He or she decides which is 'the best', and that includes setting the limits of what's included. Again, if there's ONE competition to enter, there's no argument about anything being in the right category or not. Scott also arbitrates in the event of issue/s.

Good point, absolutely.

I think we are looking at 3-5 pics per WIX member (please donate something to WIX or a warbird organisation per pic.)

Good point re-timecales - how long should we go for? 20 days?

Well there are two magazine prizes already - Classic Wings (thanks Dave) and Flightpath. More, of course would be welcome.

Anyone with any rule suggestions, get them in soon, because I think we are getting there...

Touched on by Scott, awaiting feedback. Thoughts?

So what is the latest? When does the contest start, and are we going to have a sticky thread to post them in?

Yeah, I think it'd be a good idea to start the contest soon, now that folks will be shooting at airshows, etc... in fact, I'm going to say that my offer for prizes is only going to be good if it starts within the next month or so (not that I probably wouldn't reconsider and cough them up later ).

Am I correct in assuming this competition is not going to happen as there has been no progress or plans that I am aware of? Airshow season is here and the pictures are already popping up on the internet. :?

OK, WIX ultimatum! If something doesn't happen before the end of the week, then I'm starting my own contest...

You go ahead, Ryan.

I'm happy to put a fair amount of effort into WIX, as I am doing, but despite some kind offers of contributions from yourself and some others (you know who you are) there's too much of hoping someone else is going to make it happen.

A competition's a great idea. I put forward and modified some suggestions in the light of feedback - but I can't and won't try and make it work on my own, even with Scott's blessing and donations from a kind few.

So who is prepared to contribute?

I was under the impression that once the rules were set you (JDK) would let us in?
