Hawk quiz

Thu Nov 25, 2004 6:46 am

Evenin' all.

Here's a pastime quiz - no prizes, just a warm glow if you contribute...

How many aircraft types have the name 'Hawk' as all or part of the name? Extra points (or glow) for non English variants, and aircraft named 'Hawk' by their owners...

Go...

Hi James

okay we have the Curtiss family:
the models P-1, P-2, P-3, P-5, P-6, PW-8, P-10, P-11, P-17, P-20, P-21, P-22, P-23, Navy F3C and P-36 (incl. export models) were named Hawk with variants as Gulfhawk. The P-40 series had the names Warhawk, Tomahawk, Kittyhawk, the XSC-1 was the Seahawk

then there is:

BAe Hawk
Hawker Seahawk

Grumman E-2 Hawkeye

F-117 Nighthawk

the new UAV Northrop-Grumman Global Hawk

Helo series H-60 Black Hawk with variants as Jay Hawk, Sea Hawk, Pave Hawk

South African built Red Hawk helicopter

civilian Bushhawk family

hmmmmmm - there's more

Everything by Hawkers and Hawker Siddeley.

Miles Hawk and Hawk Major.

Douglas Skyhawk

Goshawk (biplane I think, possibly by Glosters?)

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:19 am

Anything by Hawker........ Or is that cheating?

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:21 am

Miles Hawk Speed 6

Wasnt there an engine called a Goshwak as well or am I going completely mad!?

What's the German for Hawk or doesnt that count.

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:31 am

Goshawk was the steam-cooled Kestrel variant, IIRC.

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:40 am

All hawks are welcome, including German ones!

Hawkers - Yup. But could get a exhausitve...

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:49 am

allright

translated to German it's "Falke" and "Habicht"

so we have Focke Wolf Fw-187 Falke

and the DFS Habicht glider (incl. short winged variant "Stummel-Habicht")
the Me-163S (Two-seater) was called Habicht

What about the F-16 Fighting Falcon family then ?

and Hawk in French is "Falcon"

so we have the Dassault Falcon biz-jet family, too

Aha, we can also squeeze Hairyplane's Miles Falcon in then. I'm sure he'll be delighted. Does 'Harrier' count? It's sort of a Hawk...

Thu Nov 25, 2004 8:58 am

So a Miles Falcon and a Miles Hawk are the same thing then?

Thu Nov 25, 2004 9:01 am

Martinsyde Buzzard??
Also those lovely Rolls Royce birds of prey, Eagle, Falcon, Kestrel, Merlin, Griffon and the not quite so lovely Peregrin and Vulture.
Any of these count?

Also, looking through my 'Boys Book of Sopwith's' what sort of creature is a Snark?

The Sopwith variety had three wings and a Dragonfly radial.

Working on it. Aparently the Surfing is better there. (Not that I care)

MMMMmmmm....Hawk...

Hi All,

My good old mate Man on the Fence pointed me in the direction of this forum so...HURRAH!!!!....here I am!

On the subject of Hawks, please find me a Miles Hawk in any condition. OK, my Magister is described as a Hawk Major but it is a different aircraft to the gorgeous pre-war Hawk Major a la G-ADWT that I have to have but they won't sell it to me.

Maggie, Falcon and Ryan PT22 will emerge from winter maintenance looking better than ever - which is more than I can say for my bank balance...

I am a nutter...

HP.

So, HP,
You a) know and b) paid for your a/c to be scattered in small bits around the hangar at Old Warden? Good oh.

Anyway, back to topic -
Spanish for 'Hawk' anyone?
