I cant recall right now if this was previously mentioned here on the WIX but in Feb issue of Air Classics it mentions that the Planes of Fame has sold this Spit to a European collector. Anyone have any further info on this?

See the following thread where Cindy broke the news:

http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2307

Didn't ask who it was going to though. Probably a big secret anyhow.

I don't believe that this is correct. If you go to the previous thread, you will note that Cindy said that TAM had sold their spitfire to a european entity, which would make it the former David Price Mk.IX MA793, rather than POF's Mk.XIX. This is not to say that POF haven't sold their spit., just that Cindy's note was with respect to the Brazilian museum's Mk.IX. Clear as mud?

Cheers,
Richard

Doesn't TAM = The Air Museum = Planes of Fame???

I've not seen that nomenclature before for Planes of Fame (POF)... but that's not to say it isn't used. The only time I've seen TAM used though is for the Brazilian museum... which is trying to expand it's museum too. It's an interesting connundrum!

Cheers,
Richard

Cindy is a former volunteer at Planes of Fame/The Air Museum (their newsletter was called the TAM news), and I confirmed it in person- I am confident that it is the Spitfire she was referring to.

Aren't acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviations wonderful? :D

I don't have any idea what the CAF plans to purchase, however, the Spit they discussed buying is the MkXIV belonging to David Price and not the MkIX discussed above which has already gone to Brazil. And just to add more confusion, neither of these are the PoF (TAM) MkXIX PS890 which was reported sold to a buyer in France!

Hey Lynn,

I quess some people start asking question about why they were going to spend 2 million on the Spit. when they are still trying to pay off the move.

RER

Really???? Here is a quote from the October CAF Contrails report on the CAF General Staff meeting:

"Cowan moved to enter into an
agreement with David Price
(Museum of Flying Support Fund)
to purchase a Spitfire Mark XIV,
2945, for $700,000. The terms
require a payment of $250,000,
with the balance at the rate of 7
percent per year due one year
from the date of the note (June 7,
2004). A combination of He 111
Catastrophic Hull insurance
monies, aircraft acquisition funds
and other donations to this airplane
will be utilized for its purchase.
Title to the aircraft will not
transfer to the CAF until the balance
is paid in full. The motion
was seconded by Barber and
passed without objection."

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Tim

Col. Rohr, don't you remember like I do that we where told that the move was paid for and I can remember the picture of the owner of the trucking company that was donating the cost for the move. Ah those where the days

Cheers,

Lynn

Now for the TAM/POF I quess I really don't understand why they need to sell their Spit.
From the other thread:
Quote:
Money will go to meet commitments for constructing a new museum hangar. If someone had stepped up with a sizeable donation, it would not have been sold.
The new hangar will allow them to bring some things in from the cold and consolidate the collection somewhat. Just a hangar and some landscaping though, no architectural monoliths. These display hangars are vast improvements over the old days when the Zero used to be locked away in a T-Hangar for instance. More of the collection will be viewable in a more friendly environment, and the collection will be easier to maintain. Without the last hangar built, there wouldn't have been room for some of the Friedkin birds (Spit IX and Hurricane) to be on display. In the end, it is all good!

Is the Freidkin Spitfire IX ML417 back at Chino now, I was very happy to see it last year based at Gillespie Field San Diego where I spent a month learning to fly. Thankfully I managed to get a bit of free time to make the trip up to Chino before returning to the UK, must do it again I think.

I recall seeing it in the hangar a few weeks ago.
