Hello Folks:

Yes here it is again same questions as the Indonesia thread, but switching gears to China. According to a document I read there were some 440 Japanese airfields in China in WW2. I wonder if there are any planes left at any in the remote regions of China. Anyone of you gremlins got any data? :?

i know 1 of the original flying tiger p-40's is marked for recovery, a p-61 black widow is either going to be recovered, or has recently been recovered. also there has been talk of some of doolittle's 1942 tokyo raid b-25's found in various levels of physical survival status. all went down in china, a few have been supposedly spotted. regards, tom

The stuff that gets me excited about China, is the IL2's that are around there. Awhile back a nice wixer sent me a couple of pictures taken at a technical school in Bejing with two IL2's in reasonable condition sitting in the back 40. Another Wixer posted pictures of a Air/Transportation museum that had some very good looking prospects. The museum was outside, calling it a museum was kind, it kinda looked like a big version of Walt's place from the pics.

I have seen in person the stuff you are talking about. The aircraft are Il-10's. There are two well known museums in Beijing, one at the technical school in Beijing proper and another in the suburbs North of Beijing (with a hangar in the mountainside), both with Il-10's. There are also some aircraft in the Chinese Military Museum downtown, but the section with the aircraft was closed when I was there. I am not aware of any Il-2's remaining in China.

Hi bdk! You were the guy who sent me the pictures of the tech school birds. I just went back and looked at them. Very nice. I keep getting my Il2's and IL10's confused. Thanks again for the pics.

I know you giuys are mentioning the tech school birds, but I think there may be some airports in remote locations still w/aircraft. I'll research this, but evidently over 440 ex-Japanese airfields in China.

Harvard - A few years ago I mentioned on the old forum reading about Odom and Reinert flying in China in the late 40s. They were bounced by P-63s, but not attacked. They landed at a Chinese AFB and the place was full of WW2 planes, B-24s, P-47s, etc.

I seem to remember posting something on this, regarding a Korean War incident , when 2 US aircraft crossed the line, and worked over an airfield outside Vladivostock - ooops!

The combat report is on the net somewhere, but they did report P-63's etc. They also reported shooting up a? B-25 .

I often wondered if that was the fate of the last Doolittle raider.

Tony

A book came out about that plane a few years ago. Long story short, it was parked derelict in an overgrown field with some other aircraft until about 1950 when some kids playing in the area started a grass fire and all the planes burned

If any of you find out ANYTHING on the Doolittle aircraft, I'd like to be sent a "heads-up" email... I try to keep up with such stuff.

Ryan
who's hoping to interview one of the Raiders sometime next month.

If you do a search in the old archives you will find a long thread on it, including the thoughts of some Russian friends of mine who have been to the area and recovered some B-25 stuff....they never found any Doolittle B-25 remains and from what they could find out from talking to locals and checking the archives it was destroyed in the fifties.

Thanks.
I have searched the archives some for those threads. I also have some other sources, but have never been able to turn up anything farther than the stuff I have posted over at http://www.doolittleraid.com. However, it'd sure be neat if one of the China aircraft turned up. The other thing I've wondered is if any pictures remain of the plane (or two?) that was reported to have been recovered by the Japanese and displayed in Japan during the war. Right now I can't remember where I may have seen the reference, but I kind of think I remember saying that it was the remains of the 16th plane.
