Prop nomenclature

Fri Jun 13, 2008 8:20 am

This is the second time ive seen this in old WWII photos... The prop nomenclature normally is seen stenciled going in the same direction of the prop. For example: the Ham Standard stickers on the props and then closer to the prop hub is the nomenclature. Well in some photos I see that the nomenclature is in the same spot but goes across the width of the prop.

Looks at the first pic from this thread posted by Wade.

I also found prop nomenclature turned differently when researching the paint scheme for the Blue Angel's F8F for LSFM. There was a pic of Butch Voris's #1 plane with the wording going across the width of the prop.

Does anyone know if there was a particular reason why the nomenclature is changed?

someone was bored and wanted a change. Should not make a difference as long as the info is correct.

I figured its not really going to make a difference, I just didnt know the reason.

maybe they did it so the pilots would not fall over when they tried to turn their head sideways to read it.

Something I had wondered about, How come there were so many items with the same designation, ie, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1 helmet, M2 carbine, M2 .50 cal machine gun,
seems confusing

Speculation only but, could it be a quick visual clue for the crew chief or maintenance officer that denoted that prop as having been to an overhaul shop or part of a service mod program? That #2 prop looks to be fresher than the rest of the airframe......

My guess is that these were overhauled at a depot and each depot may have had a little different way of marking things. Of course the technician might have been a little hung over too.
