A certain Green B-24

We picked up the B-24 today from the paint shop at Lake City. It looks mean...the OD and Grey really make her look like a bomber should. When we arrived into New Smyrna the guys at American Aero had the stencils ready to tape the fuselage. Right now she is OD, Grey, Red & White Rudder, and Red cowling bowls. It is going to be spectacular when all the markings are applied. Also, we did a photo shoot with the Corsair from the B-25. I will post photos on webshots ASAP.

I agree, with only one B-24 flying I think this is the only way a wider variety of historical and noteworthy schemes can be seen in the air. Good job Collings Foundation.

I'm curious how much weight is added to an aircraft like a B-24 when one goes from polished aluminum to a fully painted exterior.

I think I was correct(ED) on this same point. The a/c if I remember right was painted silver, gray or what ever color it was. So the weight of the a/c really isn't going to change.

Correct me if I have this wrong, Ryan, Jim...

Ahhh, I see.

Hypothetically, I wonder how many pounds of paint it takes to cover a B-24. Not that it should really affect performance that much, but I'm curious...

Wow, looking great so far! Can't wait to see her in Olympia, WA in June!
So can I hope they won't make her into a flying billboard again? Don't get me wrong, I understand why the donors are important, but why can't those names be put on a signboard alongside the airplane? It'd be just a shame to see the bombay doors covered in names again. I remember at Tallahassee, FL once, a kid walked up to the B-24, pointed at the names, and asked his parents who all those people were and did they do that in WW2?

I've been lucky enough to score two "volunteer" rides on the B-24, and I consider it the best warbird to fly in and take photos/video from, outside of an open-cockpit aircraft. And it's funny to be able to "one up" someone who's gotten a 5 minute hop in a T-6 and thinks that's the end-all-be-all experience of all time. And I usually don't even go into the P-51 ride I had in formation with BOTH of Colling's birds…
Phil Haskel actually still seems to remember me, being the only "ramp kid" he could count on in Tallahassee each year, even though I haven't live there in almost ten years. Whenever I see him, he still gives me the "don't know you from somewhere?' look!

From what I hear, the names are going back on. I believe my good friend Paul Vasconi is spearheading the application this weekend or next down in Florida.

Also, I don't believe that Olympia is on the schedule for this year. Hopefully the museum will do something to change that!

Well, someone should tell the folks at the Olympia Flight Museum that, becuase they're telling people those birds will be at the fly-in in June, like last year...
Crying shame about that lettering, though. I actually made a donation to them the second year I saw them with the stipulation my name NOT be put on there. No worries, they said, as my donation wasn';t enough to merit a name anyway...
