This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hi all
I've had it with Flypast, as of today.
It used to be a great place to hang out but these days it's turned to poison.
I'll come and join here if you don't mind.
Cheers

Welcome to all the FPers. Just so you know the forum does occasionally crash, which is why I can sympathise with the Flypast IT guys. However, typically the occasional crash is caused by the MySQL server which runs the forums database software. My host has been working on upgrades and these have been making the crashes shorter and more infrequent. Unfortunately they do still happen. The good news is that they rarely last more than 30 minutes before we are back up and running.
So with that said we will be having bangers and mash for dinner along with pints of Guiness.

Thanks, Scott.
And thanks for providing this isle of sanity. I'm more than a little fed up with current goings on at FP myself. I'm sure that things will sort themselves out in time but it would've been much easier for all concerned if the decent thing had been done at the right time, since a change is required. I think that the lack of traffic there shows that many feel the same way about recent changes and the escalation in muppet postings.
The season's nearly upon us and I've got a new toy to play with so look forward to some more photos - and not just Spitfires (there's more to UK warbirds than Spitfires).

So that must be why you're driving about 300 miles to see 6 of them on Wednesday then Rob!
ps I like it here too, the smilies are much better!
Shame about the beer though.

It's a 400 mile round trip to East Kirkby, Mike, but it's worth it to watch NX611 roaring away. I'm looking forward to the BBMF open evening too.
Rob
Have another Spit for good measure

Thanks Scott - the problem isn't with the FP Forum crashing, more to do with some poor management decisions and the draconian censorship issues.

Rob, I think you got caught in the crossfire of something that's needed fixing for a while and put things a little too bluntly.
Let's hope that a solution can be reached without further mass desertions.

Unfortunately not, the run that night was very short and there's only a couple of places where it stands still for the time required to take a long exposure. My other photos aren't significantly different from those that I've already put up, but here are one from a previous night run:
And here's a couple taken when I went on a taxi run as apassenger. It was a moving experience and it was a privilege to share the run with 2 ex-Lancaster crew (a former pilot and mid-upper gunner).

Personally I think it is a shame any of you guys are deserting FP.
As I've discussed with Rob I think it's a bit storm-in-teacup but to make it worse you've gone about things the wrong way when it comes to 'fixing' it. Public displays of temper and ultimatums don't work. They just harden attitudes and cause those you are unhappy with to close ranks to protect 'their own'. They also make a good number of people think that it is you who are the problem - after all they only see your posts bitching about things, they don't see the posts that are removed or the reason why you're upset.
Steady - and private - pressure from multiple people to reform the mod system and make it a job that comes up for renewal may have got you the results you wanted.
I have had a few people comment to me recently that the FP forum is a bit of a waste of time because of the amount of arguments going on, and the cliquey atmosphere that is reinforced by a small number of posters carrying on what are basically private conversations tacked on the end of other people's threads. Removal of that sort of stuff to the likes of the pub threads has helped but to some, the damage is done - and they don't think it's anything to do with one particular moderator.
I got very hacked off when the Coltishall disbandment thread got hijacked by someone trying to ignite a US versus UK slanging fest, and the moderator you are all so annoyed with was very helpful in making sure the thread got back on track, and had the argumentative posts removed.
Perhaps everybody could do with just taking a step back, a pause for breath and a re-appraisal of just what they want in a forum - and that's forum, not chat room... I know I'm guilty of some chatty stuff too but it clearly does get on other people's nerves so I won't be in future.

Hi Damien
well in my case I couldn't care less about the battles between individuals and 'the moderator in question'--with me it was something much more personal than that and I don't think you or anyone else would 'suss out' what it was in a thousand years.
Something very subjective.
However all the recent rows etc don't help.
Your thread that got hijacked--well you know my involvement in that and I apologised.
I do however think that there has been an erosion there in the quality of posts in recent times and we now seem to gettting down to the level of 'lets have another Spitfire thread'.
Somewhat tedious.

We will have to wait and see if Flypast fixes a broken system. As for me the problem is simple, my posts get deleted while a certain moderator's don't. To me that smacks of censorship, especially as my posts did not contain any profanity.
As the webmaster at Flypast put it, "attacks on moderators will not be tolerated". Unfortunately when you have moderators creating very heated threads on unpopular topics there is no way not to attack them when you don't agree with their viewpoint. So basically what you have is a board that gives "carte blanc" to the moderators to do or say anything while anyone who opposes them is deleted or banned. Definately not a level playing field.
I don't feel moderators should post with the people they're supposed to be moderating. However, if they do post they should not engage in editorials such as have been seen recently in the General Discussion area of Flypast (The War in Iraq and Attacks on US military come to mind). You can't be the council for the defense and the judge at the same time. There's a conflict of interest with a certain moderator on the General Discussion board on Flypast, and until he changes his ways or resigns I have no interest in posting there.

Andy - understood, and agree about Spitfire threads. Wasn't referring to your involvement in the Colt thread by the way, more to the idiot who started the US bashing stuff.
Steve - I think the point is you can attack the argument/opinion without attacking the poster, though it gets mighty tempting to do the latter sometimes. I personally don't see a problem with someone asking for discussion on an emotive subject - it's really up to individual posters to restrain themselves in response. From what I saw of the thread you mention, the responses that got deleted were very much directed at the topic starter, and nothing to do with the discussion he was actually hoping to start. Their removal didn't seem like such a huge crime to me - but then perhaps I didn't see all of the posts that got removed.
