Nope, all the o/h'd warbird engines I hang also have o/h'd carbs installed.

Thats a terrible waste of resources. Why? Usually the carb doesn't last as long as an engine, so it doesn't have the calendar time or hours that the powerplant has. Stromberg carbs are usually reliable unless you let the diaphrams dry out. At LSFM, we would power up the airplanes and run the fuel pumps once each 7 days until the fuel overboard drains dribbled. This dropped the carburetor changes dramatically.

Devil Dog is currently inside the Marks Hangar, which is the hangar to the east of the Weeks Hangar, in Oshkosh. It is my understanding that the EAA is going to let them keep the plane in the Marks hangar over the winter if necessary. But, don't quote me on that....
From what I have heard around the Weeks Hangar, the prop got stuck while they were pulling it through, and they had to put a lot of muscle into breaking it free. Then, when they opened the oil sump, a bunch of metal showed up. Not sure exactly what's busted, but it's something significant.
Just saw her on Wednesday. If anything changes, I'll let you all know.
Oh, FYI: the T-28 that had the engine fire at Airventure left about a week ago, and is back home in Texas.

I understand the metal was brass. Someone said that indicates rod bearings? Just what I heard, but not solid facts.

Metal in the oil sump is NEVER good news. Do they have one of those gizmo's on the oil system to watch for metal bits? Seems like on these big old engines it would literally be a lifesaver.

The last one (1340) I did a couple of months back had a 1954 o/h tag on the engine & a 1957 o/h tag on the carb....
Want to guess at the hours they had?
We know it was the wrong side of 3500hrs....but not how far ... I'd say it was time to replace both the carb & engine

Devil Dog members are working hard at raising money for the engine. We elected to buy an engine that was in the middle of an overhaul which was the quickest way to get an engine and be able to half the current one as a spare to be overhauled later. It appears after talking to the engine shop that overhauled the right engine that the bearing to the supercharger failed, thus brass in some of the metal that was found.
We had a member who would loan the money, however the CAF headquarters did not approve that. They instead have put us to the challenge of raising this money in a certain amount of time, thus not having debt on one of their airplanes. Their backup plan is another unit is standing by with the money. So in order to keep the Devil Dog in Texas we could use your help with donations. No donation is too small or large. With generous support of people like yourself we have currently raised $27,000.00….another $48,000.00 is needed.
We are also actively seeking Flying Sponsors, a one time investment of $3500.00 this will help in raising the money for the left engine and help us in getting more pilots for the Devil Dog.
Some of the members will be going to OSH on Sept 24th to Sept. 29th to pull the left engine, all the accessories and thoroughly flush out everything to get it ready for the new engine. We could also use some volunteers if anyone in the area would like to help. WWW.devildogsquadron.com for more info.

Beth just sent this out. I thought I'd share it with my fellow WIXer's. Seems they are getting REAL close, but still are time-critical to reach their goal, or lose the Devil Dog. Please, dig deep and see if you can scrape up a few bucks to help get the Devil Dog back in the air and home to Georgetown. Can you send a check for $5 or $10 even? The small donations can quickly ad up to get them over the top!!

The plans are the first of the year to go up to Oshkosh and get the engine installed. A goal is to have it ready for airshow season which starts in middle of March of 2010.
We have raised over 80% of the funds. We wanted to thank everyone who has graciously donated time, money and their support with our efforts in raising the money to be able to keep the Devil Dog PBJ-1J in Texas. The Devil Dog Squadron has been truely blessed with such friends.
We have 6 weeks to raise the rest of the money and are confident that we can accomplish this goal, since we have come so far with this endeavor. For those of you who may of thought of supporting the Devil Dog we could use your help in the next few weeks.
