Jack

I am afraid I cannot not share your view - 511th FS definitely was K4 coded while the 510th was 2Z

I didn't rgister on the site to see all of the recovered '47's photos..so, what
color is the nosebowl on this machine? Looks kinda dark in the blk/wht
photo provided to be a yellow one?

Yup

I am sure

check this site (link already posted earlier) - all ships are 2Z coded

http://www.510fs.org/index.php

Throughout my bibliography the 511th always is given as K4.......

"Thundermonsters over Europe"
"The 9th Air Force in World War 2"
"The Ninth Air Force In Color"
"Support and Strike"
"Ninth Air Force Story"
etc.
etc.

The link you posted is of poorly researched content.

They also got the codes for 366th FG wrong.

Airnutz-

Well, as recovered it's black, but there are traces of yellow behind the green nose art surround... IIRC, all P-47s delivered in NMF to the ETO carried black noses (and I think that applies to P-51s as well). The individual units would overpaint or strip them... Martin, please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

It is yellow painted over the ETO markings which were black on NMF ships - also the canopy-frame was yellow - and traces of the yellow color are still visible there, too

=> Yellow = Squadron Color for the 511th FS

Awesome ! I have always wondered about the planes that went down on the eastern front both german and russian, this really makes me want to go and find some more a/c that have to be over there. I hope who ever owns this jug will put it back in the air!

Yeah, the many lakes of Pommerania and East Prussia would have some great finds still I'm sure! :)
