US Naval Aviation Centennial

The US Naval Aviation Centennial is fast approaching, 2011. My hope is to be able to secure a tour in the Midweat, of a Wildcat Fighter recovered from Lake Michigan, during the summer of 2011, to provide a public outreach and education experience to people about the important part Lake Michigan, Glenview Naval Air Station, and Chicago played in the victory in the Pacific War.

Does anyone wish to help me with this effort?

One would expect in 2011 that airshow organizers would start knocking on the doors of N3N owners everywhere!!! Better hurry now as there are not many of us. Then you can advertise true Naval Aviation History.........The last biplane in military service, Airframe AND ENGINE..........also build by the navy!!!! But I am sure in these time, organizers will take the CHEAP route and find one of those OTHER yellow biplanes

I just remembered that at the combined US military aviation centennial here in San Antonio, specific mention was made of the upcoming centennial of naval aviation. You might want to see if there is and who is heading up the official celebrations and trying to tie-in with them.

Indeed! Sounds very interesting, will have to keep and eye on things, might have to do a road trip up to P-cola if they have anything interesting. I take it, Florida will NOT be on the Mid-West Tour!?!?

If anyone wishes to expand on the idea let me know. I see nothing wrong with a larger tour, it just takes some conversation and additional funding, which is not bad, because there is economy in scale.

However, your ideas only count if you are willing to put some effort or funding behind them.

Right people, right place, right time I think is the issue. Right now, I am getting the distinct impression that the Midwest (area you talked about doing a tour in) is in bad straights overall. We're seeing a LOT of folks from California and the Midwest here in Texas these days moving here to a job.

Any WIXers up in the area want to chime in? Can you refer any friends to this topic and see if something can get started?

Well, the Centiennial year is now nearing an end.. Ever, the procratinator, I offer another related Naval Centennial topic, novelty. I was just playing with these old models. They are NEARLY 100 years old, themselves! Here is a model of the Famous Curtiss Triad, built from lacquered paper, wood and bamboo strips, by the famous aviation artist, Charles Hubbell, when he was still a teenager, and long before his artistic fame. These models are Circa 1913-1915. Another 15 or so, may be seen on my website
