I had never been to Reno before, so it was a little disappointing to see the crown jewel race canceled, however the winds were bad and the alternative could have been much worse. The Thunder Mustang crash just before the canceled gold race reinforced this. I missed the impact as my view was blocked by a fuel truck and I was on the wrong end of the field, but I could see it was not going to turn out well. All around where I was standing were relieved to hear over the PA that the pilot was standing and waving.
As for what could have been... it did seem that Strega was in good form, and Rare Bear was being saved for the race that counted. I did get see a few laps from these two on the previous day that seemed to indicate they were ready to rip it up. The Galloping Ghost did not seem to have much competition in it's heats and seemed it would only be effectively matched once in the final gold race. It was shaping up to be an impressive race. I don't think the Tigercats would have presented serious competition in the gold final, but they can be significant obstacles to get around. It would have been an interesting race to say for sure.
Hopefully I can set aside some bucks for next year, so I can finally see a gold unlimited race the way it is supposed to be run, on the edge and full throttle.
