Unlimited Gold Canceled due to High Winds. We have to wait till next year to see if the "Ghost" can kick some butt.

Is it just me or did the Unlimited competition at Reno this year, the canceled Gold Race notwithstanding, seem a bit lame?

Were the other classes any better?

Everything I heard from friends with the Rare Bear crew made me think that the Unlimited Gold race was going to be good...
However, this: http://aafo.com/hangartalk/showthread.php?t=8453&page=2 makes me convince they were correct to cancel the races for the winds. There's some incredible pics there of a deadstick Thunder Mustang landing that thankfully ended a lot better than it looked like it would. Sounds like the Unlimited pilots made the right call.

I had never been to Reno before, so it was a little disappointing to see the crown jewel race canceled, however the winds were bad and the alternative could have been much worse. The Thunder Mustang crash just before the canceled gold race reinforced this. I missed the impact as my view was blocked by a fuel truck and I was on the wrong end of the field, but I could see it was not going to turn out well. All around where I was standing were relieved to hear over the PA that the pilot was standing and waving.

As for what could have been... it did seem that Strega was in good form, and Rare Bear was being saved for the race that counted. I did get see a few laps from these two on the previous day that seemed to indicate they were ready to rip it up. The Galloping Ghost did not seem to have much competition in it's heats and seemed it would only be effectively matched once in the final gold race. It was shaping up to be an impressive race. I don't think the Tigercats would have presented serious competition in the gold final, but they can be significant obstacles to get around. It would have been an interesting race to say for sure.

Hopefully I can set aside some bucks for next year, so I can finally see a gold unlimited race the way it is supposed to be run, on the edge and full throttle. :-)

Rare Bear had a Dave Cornell-built race motor. Plenty of smash!

There is a reason there is not much info. Rare Bear and her crew were not accesible to the normal racing folk. It was kept very quiet as to what was going on. They had the Bear in a hangar and did not let the public within 50 feet. Their pit was empty all race weekend and was never used.

There is also a rumor that Dave Cornnel and John Penney have left the team as of the closing of this years air races. There are two camps on this one. The ones who are upset about it and the fact that Rare Bear has lost what made it so special, which was fans being so close to the crew and the inner workings of the team. And there are those who think Rod Lewis can run the team however he wants, even if that means he is keeping fans away. If you really want to read about it go to this thread.
