TFC have removed the rear seat and had the structure re-built back to stock condition.

The fuselage was sent to Cal Aero Fab for some re-work which included the removal of the rear " jump " seat & re-structuring of that area.

Wings arrived on friday 09:00 after being re-sparred & some new skins.

Final colour scheme is being considered at present

I'd have to dig out the slides to be sure but I believe the hanger shots were in the mid to late 70's. I know the location was Eagle Aviation at Jones-Riverside Airport near Tulsa. They also had a flyable P-38 and a P-40 wreck recovered from Alaska.

I believe Elwyn is probably correct. Mr. Kerr sent me the photos, and I believe he said that they were taken before Mr. Stutsman obtain it. That would put the pictures in the 70's.

I suggested to Martyn that the final paint scheme could honor both the 78th FG and Maj. Beckham. The original Little Demon (S/N 42-8476) was transfered from the 353rd to the 78th sometime in early 1944. It retained the Little Demon name, but recoded MX-X.

The photo of the 38 is interesting. It is shot while owned by David Boyd of Tulsa, OK. As a kid I bought a number of old 1970s Air Classics in a second-hand store and amongst this treasure was an old A/C trader from 1977. That was my first indication of surviving P-38s and their prices. The tag on this particular Lightning was at the time $250.000. The price range was confirmed when I got my stash of magazines safely home, and read the account from Madera 79. In the story pilot Dick Martin (who flew John Deahl's N6961) mentioned that Diehl had just turned down $250.000 for his 38.

I remember the P-38 along with P-47 "Unadilla Killa" and a Mk.XIV or XIII Spitfire at a little airport near Broken Arrow, OK. in the early '80s.

Back in 1982 I have seen that flying and made some Super-8 film only a few weeks after completion of the rebuild to fly by Ray Stutsman. That was a nice addition to a modelling airshow on the private grounds of Byron Godbersen at Ida Grove, Iowa. The digitalized film is now online here:

Somebody have another shot of the P-38? Looks like it has a homemade 2 seat conversion on it. Don't think I ever saw that one before....

Also "HangtheExpense".... I was at Stutsman's shop in 1983/4 and in the back of the hangar there was a P-40 they were building a cowling for. It was "from the tundra" as they said. It was also ROTTEN, corroded to where just about touching it and you could put a hole in it anywhere. Any clue on where it is now?
