Inspector
How about the 498th at Paine?

Unfortunately, the 498th wasn't here that long, the transition from 'Deuces' to Darts went pretty quickly and the Darts were soon gone to be replaced by a C-119 troop carrier wing until the base went surplus in 1968 and was leased to the county.
THe state building I used to teach 787 stuff in is built over the old missle and bomb lockers area of Paine, I used to tell newbie students a quick history of the field as an introduction warmup and tell them to 'just ignore the ticking sounds you may hear'  I also used to tell them that the 'neighbors' who complain about the noise never lived here when the 102's flew from here, 'if one took off @ 12:45 you could still hear and see it @ 13:30, THAT is airplane noise'. :finga: :finga:

What!?! no one knows the followup line to 'why not Minot?'

Ya know...it just wasn't the same after they switched to the F-15. My grandparents lived under the approach/departure corridor at McChord and any time they'd scramble a couple of -106's out I'd go running for the front door to watch!

Last time I saw them was the '83 airshow under cloudy skies....but I liked their demo better than the Thunderbirds that day.

people used to complain about the A-10s & C-12s on short final for Willow Grove. it made me laugh, i've heard the midnight P-3 engine run ups, and max performance F-8 takeoffs were much worse.

I'll admit the F-106's I used to watch at Jacksonville, FL, ANG base were loud, but the Harrier definitely takes the award as the most efficient machine man has ever invented to convert jet fuel to noise.

the F-35 is supposed to be another level of loud. plugs, ears, bury your head in the sand.

Wrap your ears around a pulse jet and you may change your mind about that.

Interestingly enough, I seem to recall a DOD, perhaps a Department of the Navy study where they found that the EA-6B Prowler at take-off actually had the highest decible level of any aircraft in the inventory. That was in the mid-90's.

DING-DING-DING-DING-!!!!!  Minot in the 'other' season gets cold enough to make folks want to go to Fairbanks to enjoy the warmer temperatures, and maybe get in some waterskiing

As someone who has lived under and around NAS Oceana since I was a kid I can confirm using the ear drum ometer that the A 6 / EA 6 B were the loudest aircraft I can recall. F 4's in after burner were not exactly whisper quiet either.
