From my standpoint and all the miss information that I've been given or over heard at museums I welcome any questions to clear things up. To often this miss information doesn't get cleared up and can become "fact" overtime. Please feel free to ask questions that you've heard. We here at WIX should welcome the chance to clear up the ignorance that is spread around about museum activities and other topics. Thanks for asking and I hope that you stick around and enjoy this "specials" community of warbird nuts.

Tim

I agree that one should not take what museum staffers say as fact. Unless it comes from the head honcho after an official inquiry, take it with a grain of salt. Plus, the word "scrapped' means different things to different people. They may mean that the museum "just got rid of it", or "we disposed of it" both of those comments can be interpreted as junked, not de-accessioned, as the proper museum term should be.

Case in point: The Bell X-14 vertical flight test bed was damaged in 1981 in it's only accident in 25 years, since the start of the program. It was reported scrapped in publications and books, one being Jay Miller's excellent "X-Planes".

About 10-15 years ago it shows up as a scrap pile in an auction at Fort Rucker, AL. Fred Ropkey, of the Ropkey Armour Museum in Crawfordsville, IN takes a gamble and goes down to look. he can't believe that except for the crash and some fire damage, the entire X-14 is sitting disassembled on a pallet waiting for someone to buy it "for scrap"!

Guess where it sits now?

Image

And the NMUSAF is beating down his door to add it to their X-plane collection!

You never know what might turn up even though things were reported scrapped!

HOWDY Muddy Boots, HOWDY Jack!

If ANYBODY would like a free pair of non-servicable Beech 18 cowlings I can fix you right up.
They are actually WARBIRD parts, because they still have the tags for whatever the Navy called Beech 18s. Sorry- I have CRS syndrome.

They are GENUINE OUT OF A BARN from Cut and Shoot, TX. and the only reason they are unserviceable is the bird poop did a number on the leading edges.
They would be the PERFECT addition to anyone's Man-Cave... Den... Hangar...

Contact me via PM on WIX and if you come haul 'em away they are all yourn's!

That's a heck of an offer Spanner! Wish I lived closer so I could take advantage of it. For all of its/our quirks, it's things like this that make WIX a great place to hang out!

Spanner, sounds neat. If Carlisle1926 or Obergrafeter dont make the pickup, consider me third and call me at 979-203-1571. I'm messing around with a warbird cowling-look ceiling fan......

Well said Steve, and Jerry makes a good point that 'scrapped' has different meanings to different people. I should know since my intro to WIX was to defuse a kerfluffle I stirred up indirectly with an unclearly-worded msg. I had posted to another aviation forum that was reposted here.
One of LSFM's rules is that we refrain from hangar talk or speculation. "When in doubt go to the website or ask the CO."

Nobody explained the LSFM rules to me, but I guess I somehow took it as common sense to keep quiet unless I know what I'm talking about. If you can imagine that. I know, I'm weird.

So what's the deal with the Hurricane and Spit, I wonder? I ought to know, but have not a clue. I ask here 'cuz surely others would like to know too.

It seems that I've stirred the pot by asking about what had or had not happened down there. It seems to me that the LSFM staff should not tell perfect strangers about spearing several aircraft with a forklift to aid fitting them into the dumpsters not long after the storm. These could well have been modern Cessnas- or they may never have crushed anything at all on the entire property, but the staff member certainly led me to believe that they crushed something.Hence my question about it on here. Obviously we all now know that no warbirds were crushed and it is good to know that all is well.
However, I tend to believe people that say things about scrapping whole aircraft while they are dumping radial engines and other parts into a dumpster in plain view during hours of operation. Whether a guy is the head honcho or the lowest guy on the pole, he is still a representative of the museum. I suppose it was my mistake to believe any part of the tale. But that is why I love this forum. The people that actually know something and care, are always here to set the record straight. In this case, I am happy to be wrong for believing what the LSFM staff member said. I thank all of you for correcting me.
