Cali Plans For Largest Static Collection of Aircraft in USA?

Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:53 pm

A friend forwarded me yet another annoying story that will affect ALL the Recip engine aircraft in the state. Seems the Atty General is hooking up with some nutcase Enviromental group to Ban Avgas in the State of California.

What is wrong with these people?

Well....I can tell you right now that ain't gonna fly. (Thanks folks I'll be here all week, try the veal).

But seriously. This kind of stuff comes up with some frequency. The Feds have control of (a) interstate commerce and (b) aviation which are kinda one in the same. A lot of people will raise a ruckus in DC, and this will go away pretty fast I reckon.

But there's a bigger issue here: State govs are looking for money wherever they can find it, so watch out!

For example, for years in Texas, you could register your classic car with year of manufacture plates (i.e., I have a 65 Mustang, so I have 65 plates for it) at no extra costs. Starting 9.1.11, no more. You can (for a small fee of course) get yourself a license plate which says "classic" or "antique" auto. But you cannot use year of manufacture plates no matter how good they look. Since the number of constituents who want to use YOM plates is small, you can guess how far our arguments against the bs rule went.

But with the CA deal, I'm sure there's a big enough constituency of people with skin in the game who'll get this no-lead thing shot down quickly.

Proof positive that Sacramento ranks right up there with San Francisco for the number of square miles surrounded by reality   :?

My wife and I flew in the EAA Ford Trimotor a couple weeks ago, and one of the volunteers was saying they would probably not be able to get gas for it soon, and that the fuel had already been banned in California. I tend to take those sort of alarmist comments with a grain of salt though.

That's odd. I used to live in Texas and liked their laid-back car regulations.
I moved to "progressive" Washington state and they recently (finally) started to allow YOM plates.

I don't have them because with "collector" (or horseless carriage) plates, you pay a one-time fee and don't have to display a front plate...important because my 1914 roadster doesn't have a place for a plate and my 63 Avanti looks terrible with a plate.

I have 1977 Plates for my Trans Am Bandit, and 1955 for my Bel Air convertible. The YOM plates really make them look good

I've used the original 1963 Washington plate that was issued to my late father when he bought the car new in '63. It's kind of fun to get pulled over by a freshly minted State Trooper who starts the conversation with 'I ran your plate and it doesn't come up' "it won't" 8) , 'you don't have a current year tab' "I don't need one" 8) 8) , then I dig out the registration which is full of zeros for expiration dates and fees paid, and start explaining to the Trooper how I paid a one time $45.00 fee and the car is registered as a 'classic' forever, then the Trooper, who's usually less than half the cars age starts to get 'into' the car, when I explain that the cars' been in my family since new, it usually ends with a sort of whimsical smile and wave from the Trooper.

Ain't that the truth!!! My '57 Commander and Parkview are the same in that way.
My '65 Cruiser has a 'personal plate, but I have the right mount for it~

I'll bet some of California's legislators are pilots who fly (and perhaps own) piston-powered aircraft. Won't such a ban on avgas stop them from flying? What's that? Oh... yeah... they're the lawmakers... they'll just exempt themselves from the ban. Never mind.

They'll get the state to buy them an aircraft that burns Jet fuel and then say they solved the problem.

One more reason to push for a statute that would allow the electorate to be able to line up their elected mis-representatives twice a year and give each of them a 'dumba$$' slap.

No mas señor:
Text of section effective on September 01, 2011

Sec. 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAVEL TRAILERS. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old. The license plates must include the word "Classic" or a similar designation, as appropriate.
(b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department if the plates are approved for the vehicle before September 1, 2011. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.
(c) There is no fee for issuance or approval of license plates under this section.

This is why I know all my representatives office addys/telephone numbers. Whenever I see something like this come up, I don't wait for election time to give my opinion. What they do with it is their business, but they can't represent me if I don't tell them what I need represented. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don't, but they certainly have my view on it.
