At the site were what appeared to be bone fragments, but further testing will be needed to confirm that, Capt. Tania Bryan with the Alaskan Command said Thursday. The plane looked military, based on material found in the debris, Bryan said. The plane and its occupants have so far not been identified, she said.

Cool. Probably the missing B17 which disappeared without a trace during World War Two carrying tons of gold ingots. Explains the flight restrictions too....

Hey Inspector, it could have been a circled red X.....

That was a post war C-54 and it's still out 'there', the missing NWA (not the rap group!) DC-4 was found several years ago.

I wonder if they rediscovered the C-54 that crashed on the Iliamna glacier near Anchorage in Dec of 1958?
I say rediscovered because it was found by famed bush pilot Don Sheldon.

It was enroute from Elmendorf to Shemya trasporting the base payroll. The wreckage and payroll was never recovered (at least as of 1970-80s).

the NWA was a chartered load of Merchant Marine sailors returning to the states from, Shanghai Mar. 13, 1948 24 pax 6 crew all lost near Mt. Sanford.

If it is a photo of this wreck it looks like 985 with a 2 blade Ham Std prop spider on the crank.
Whether it is from a Twin Beech or Beaver I can't tell.

Howard DGA series (Army UC-70 and Navy GH-1,2,3, NH-1 etc) used the 985 too. If I could see the sheet metal on the other side of the engine it might give a better clue.

The team put on climbing harnesses and crampons, roped themselves together and started collecting, Dobson said. The investigators worked on the glacier from June 19 to 21. The evidence they gathered -- including possible human remains and some of the plane's life-support equipment -- was flown to their laboratories in Hawaii, Dobson said.

Though there were likely some pieces inside the crevasses, the team stayed on top for safety, Dobson said.

For now, the investigators' official answer is the evidence appears to point to a 1950s-era plane, and there are some initial guesses as to what type of plane they found, Dobson said. Those early assessments are included in reports and won't be shared publicly, she said.
