Fair enough. As you know, I've zero support for that British desire for everything on a plate. Lesser types? Like the Dornier 335 back to Germany, or the Kawasaki Emily to Japan? Sure, it makes sense sometimes, but then collections like the Smithsonian are of global import because of their global collection. My comment stands that those 'returns' happen when there's enough push for that.

As I said, I think we may well be surprised by the turnout for the Zero in Japan; it seemed remarkable in the photos I saw of what must be the 1995 tour, from Brandon's correction.

I find that Japanese youth (which in my case means younger than 50) are very interested, understanding and curious for knowledge about WWII and the machines that were used. A group of friends went to the Air force Museum once and spent an hour under the wing of Bock's Car speaking with a group of old and young Japanese men and women and they expressed enthusiastic interest in the bomber and many other airplanes and concepts on their use during the war. They stopped us many times as we passed by later in other hangars too, so they're just like airplane junkies everywhere.

+1 cwmc. Many Japanese of all ages are no less interested in the unvarnished history of the war than we are, especially the technical side. I too have had the experience of showing them around US museums and seeing their interest in aircraft of all types, and just look at the models their hobbyists build. And this has been true all the way back to the 1960s and before -- remember Koku-Fan, which covered aircraft of all nations primarily for a Japanese audience? Like us, they may be touchy about some of their wartime atrocities, but plenty have an active interest in the other side's weapons.
