If all continues to go well, there will be six P-38's attending the Planes of Fame 2013 Airshow next weekend. Five flying and one static as that being the Yanks Air Museum P-38. The Judy will be taxing under her own power as well I understand. Nice job once again by the folks at POF etc. to put together another great lineup this year. Wish the best of success to all involved.
Rod Lewis 'Glacier Girl'
POF '23-skidoo'
Jack Croul 'Honey Bunny'
Tallimook Air Museum 'Tangerine'
Friedkin Family 'Thoughts of Midnight'
Yanks Air Museum 'Photo version' (static)
Lots of photos to come ...

Have a great time! Sorry I couldn't be there this year, but I have to save the world first!

Hey Muddy, you already
helped saved the world once so twice will put you in rarified air, you'll be missed
Six P-38's in the air at the same time would be something to see in this day and age, but so will five in the air.

Six lined up on the ground will be a sight to see as well.

Probably won't see any this low though.

Remember when '23-Skidoo' was 'Porky II'? .... Both schemes were/are nice indeed.

Well since I arrived late for the Chino POF show Saturday and had to leave early due to a few SoCal fires, my extremely novice photo taking had far too many people in them to want to share with you all. So I'll leave it to the professionals to display their artwork, ... of which Britt Dietz is one of the best in the business so here are just two from his facebook page of the main theme of the show this year.
I didn't get to hang around to see all five in the air at the same time and I'm not even sure that actually happened. Someone else who got there earlier and stayed later may state otherwise, but as you can see all 5 flyable P-38's did get up for a photo shoot. Great shot by Britt. And of course the P-40C looks outstanding. My own personal wish list would be for the folks at TFC at Duxford to re-paint theirs in RAF desert markings so we would have what? One Pearl harbor example, one AVG example, this early example in the photo below and one RAF example of early P-40's. Just my simple thoughts as I don't own them.
For the time I was at the show once again a wonderful job by all involved and the Oracle tent was again a great hangout.
Cindy's volunteers were all outstanding and very nice and helpful, no drama that I witnessed from anyone regarding anything. Fans seemed respectful and knowledgable. Other than a tad windy, the weather was comfortable indeed. Another great show as usual.

Unlikely, as it is the only survivor, airworthy or static, that still wears its original markings, amongst a bunch of wannabe Flying Tigers and Pearl Harbor airplanes.

Ahh yes!! indeed! I omitted that small little detail about TFC example. Well then which one shall we confiscate and start painting in RAF markings?

I talked to Chuck Gardner by phone last Friday & he was there, hopefully he will post some pics.

All 5 flew Saturday afternoon as well as a nice 2 ship flight earlier in the day. The opening flight of the Peashooter, P-40, P-51 and F-86 wasa pretty cool deal as well!

Jeff Harris would've been pretty excited about that formation of P-38's.

I remember several years ago when there was quite a bit of interest over the fact that the POF show had three P-38's in attendance, and that was only 1 flying and two static (the two static that year were the Yanks F-5 and P-38L N79123, which was to be sold to Ron Fagen and became 'Ruff Stuff').
Amongst the very cool P-26/P-40C/P-51/F-86 formation, and the five P-38 formation, it's pretty cool to see the recently paint-stripped and actively flown PB4Y (N2871G) show up, with post-war stars & bars applied.

The Yanks Air Museum P-38 on static reminded me of Scatterbrain Kid (where are those pieces now?). What does the Yanks' P-38 lack to be airworthy? Is that a goal?

What would it take to get 6 or even 7 in the air in at Chino in the future?

The only US-based airworthy P-38 that wasn't there was the Minnesota-based "Ruff Stuff", which had been part of the five P-38 gathering in 2010 for the California Capital airshow ("23 Skidoo" had to drop out that year, at the last minute, due to an engine problem that arose, and "Tangerine" wasn't able to attend, so the total attendance at that show was four). "Ruff Stuff" is flown a lot, and gets around a lot, though I guess it wasn't in the cards for this air show (it has to make the longest journey of any of the U.S.-based P-38's to get to Chino). The only other one currently flying in the world is the Red Bull example, based in Austria (which has gotten around Europe quite a bit in the last couple years). Westpac Restorations are very likely the ones to look to for the next flying P-38's to come from, with at least two projects actively being worked on (unless one of the airframes like the Yanks example or the War Eagles example are gone through thoroughly and brought up to flying spec and flown).

Last year, 2012, the Yanks Museum had their EC-121 on display, along with their Lockheed C-40A. Had they brought out the C-40 again this year, along with the other two, we would have had three generations of Lockheeds on display.
