I'm going to take that last shot, run it through the grayscale converter in Photoshop, and you almost wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't taken in 1943.

Usually digital images simply turned into B&W still don't look at all authentic. Unless there is some sort of program out there, the modern images are not grainy like film (you can also notice it when you view old motion picture film and compare it to videotape...as an example watch an episode of MASH which was shot on film vs. most other 70s-80s sitcoms that were taped).

Correct you are. The ole "Air doesn't burn" issue. Air isn't really a substance. It's a collection of substances, some of which may burn. But the primary component (oxygen) is the catalyst of fire. However, oxygen itself doesn't burn.
