Re: What airshow to go to question

Does anyone else find it difficult to commit to shows in Seattle (or the UK for that matter) due to the predictable (aka unpredictable) weather? I would hate to fly to either Seattle or the UK for a show only to find it raining all weekend. If I was already there and had an alternate plan, or if reasonable alternates were available, that might change my outlook.

Brandon... We've been to Duxford 5 or 6 times. I don't remember it raining enough to cancel Flying Legends or to even make it uncomfortable, and that show is well worth the effort! (However...At my age, memory is the second thing to go. )

I had that problem with the MAM show last year. Poured both days I was there and hardly anything flew. I've pretty much resolved to only take overnight warbird-related trips if the event is being held at a museum I want to visit. That way, there's at least something to look at even if there is no flying and it doesn't feel like a wasted trip. I still had a good time at Virginia Beach last year despite the rain.

Been to Duxford twice, no rain either time and a whole h*ll of a lot to do over there if it did rain. Chino has been good to me as I sat in several cockpits there over the years. Oshkosh I have history with sleeping under dad's wing and that was always special. TOM once, great show usually. Houston and Midland once each, both great fun.

Chino to answer your question.

Flying to the UK for one airshow would be a bit excessive anyway, but they tend to have several airshows tightly spaced in time and place plus some amazing museums, so I'd go for a few weeks and cover my bets.

When I went to Duxford it rained both days, but it was your typical English drizzle and it didn't deter any flying, not even the open cockpit stuff. I gained a grateful respect for British operators' relevance to expose their planes to a little weather, both on the ground and in the air. Not sure the same is true in Seattle although the truth is that summers are pretty dry there.

Both Seattle and the UK tend to the drizzly kind of rain that may not completely kill the day, unlike the epic storms that the central and eastern U.S. gets in the summer.

For those who do not regularly check the Geneseo airshow roster, there was a bit of a stealth update last week. The Mosquito is still listed, and they have added Fagen's P-38 and CWH's Lysander and Mitchell. Nothing listed yet from Long Island or Millville.

Hard to believe this event is just 3.5 weeks away now. The above plus Charlie Lynch's new-to-the-area TBM and some familiar Mustangs should make for a pleasant weekend.

I will be attending Geneseo and TOM this year. The best thing about Geneseo is how close you can get to the action... it's like no other show! Additionally, it is on TURF with natural sceninc backgrounds. Makes for amazing photographs.
