Martin maryland survivor found...and available

The Aeroplane and Classic Wings magazines have both reported on a Martin Maryland found in Africa.
The RAF museum has said it can't afford to recover it.

Perhaps the Martin museum could get it? The Maryland was not operated by the USAAF, so they're not going to be interested.

It's worth going after. It's a good investment. This is one I would actually put some investment money in , if a consortium of investors were put together to bring it back. Like the Brewster Buffalo, it's a once extinct combat type. Kermit weeks may be interested as it kind of fits the profile of his collection. Just like the Russian finds, no one wants to deal with a corrupt govt., but once it's landed in the U.S. it's value increases considerably and it might take a few years for a national museum to raise the money or have a donor come forward.
WHy doesn't someone contact Pat Epps, he initiated the retrieval of Glacier Girl? This would be easier.

I'm surprised the RAF Museum wouldn't try harder to get it, considering this is the type which WC Adrian Warburton used for his insane low-low-LOW level reconnaissance of the Taranto harbor on 11 November 1940, prior to the Swordfish laying waste to the ships within that night. Backstory: the cameras in his Maryland failed for some reason and after several orbits of the area waiting to get the cameras working, he dove down and flew so low, his observer simply read the names on the ships as they rocketed past.

That aircraft absolutely MUST be preserved and restored- whether in RAF or French Aeronavale markings does not matter to me, what matters is that a previously extinct example of Martin's history has been found and needs to be brought home!

...but if its value is measured only in cash, then maybe it should be left where it is. I assumed it was worth more than that.

Everything has a monetary value.. even the most historic of items.
Furthermore, cost is absolutely a consideration when looking at any restoration and recovery. Even a recovery to display this aircraft as it sits now will likely take a lot of money for negotiations with foreign owners/governments, import/export, transportation, travel, time, etc. Therefore, I think MarineAir's post is valid and something to think about. I hope someone can get it!

Unless the Martin Museum received a huge infusion of cash, I don't think they could take on a project like this. They have quite a few projects on their own home turf that need attention, like the AM-1 Mauler. This isn't meant as a slam against the Martin Museum folks. They do the best they can with the resources they have available. The problem is they simply don't the resources that some of the bigger players in the Warbird movement can bring to bear.
